Q: Will it work on varnish?

Yes, once the varnish has cured to manufacturers recommendations, this can be used on varnish.

Q: What is the best solution in this brand for light scratches and black scuff marks that aren't deep?

This Perfect it worked well for me. I had black fuel spots on the back of my motorhome. Nothing would take them off. I used this with a machine buffer(Dewalt). It came out like new. Then a couple of coats of marine wax on the top and good to go.

Q: Can you use it by hand? What is the best technique for that?

This product is for machine use, it is the second stage of the 3 stages to be use. This product is to be used after wet sand with 1200 or 1500 sand paper. For using it by hand (not recommend) but if is an small area(not a fender) it work, a terry cloth for application and a micro fiber cloth for cleaning is great. For a better finish it use good to use the stage 3 after this step, or wet sand area to be polish with 2000 grid and use stage 3 product instead that stage 2.

Great! Speed of the polisher is paramount! Hold the speed to 1800 rpm. I was very pleased with the results on my boat. Don't cook it! RKS
