As ships arrived, Rembrandt strolled the Amsterdam docks searching for soft leathers, shining metals, furs … whatever would make his paintings interesting and challenging for his brush. Along with his many artistic contributions, Rembrandt took the traditional image of Christ in an entirely new direction. He became the first artist to paint Jesus as Semitic, not an Apollo-like European. No artist ever produced the quantity of religious art as this artist did … even though his life held constant heartache and struggle. "Coming Home" is about the man, his times, and the subjects in his art. Specificially studied is his famous painting, "The Return of the Prodigal Son."
