Hiding Places
Young Kate was good at finding hiding places and staying out of the way. Her family's home was Harrison Lodge, built many years ago by one of her great, great, great grandfathers as a private home. Today, most of the family lives in the cottages on the grounds and they all work to keep the Lodge running. It now has a restaurant on the bottom floor, guestrooms on the second and a large banquet or meeting hall on the top floor. Plenty of places for Kate to hide out and collect information. Her favorite person is her Grandfather, he is the only one who takes time to be with her and teach her things. Kate's mother doesn't have much of a relationship with her because she has been heartbroken about Kate's father leaving her. She spends her time reading novels. The other part of the story is about kids who have no family so they band together to form their own families or gangs. Charlie is one who knows he has to get away from his gang but against his better judgment he agrees to do one more job to get enough money together to leave. Things go terribly wrong and a 12 year old boy from another gang is killed. Charlie winds up at the Lodge after his stolen motorcycle crashes into a mountain lion running across the road. He is badly injured and needs help.I really liked the characters in this book. They were so well fleshed out, I felt like I knew each one. The meeting of Kate and Charlie shows how lives can change when you have someone to care for. Family is a reoccurring theme in Ms Healy's books.Erin Healy knows how to keep her readers interested with unexpected plot twists and surprises. The suspense slowly builds throughout the book and leads to a very satisfying conclusion. If you haven't read any of Healy's other books , this is a good introduction to her writing.

A different take on a suspense tale.
Hiding Place is one of those usual books that takes you on a journey you never saw coming. In both parts suspense and character driven, it explores issues of forgiveness and family through the eyes of a eleven year old girl.Strange things are occurring around Kate Whitby, as the youngest member of her eccentric family, she is determined to hold tight to the life she has always known. Then the day after she sees her grandfather arguing with his best friend, that same friend is brutally murdered throwing suspicion her grandfather’s way.Another young hooligan chooses the worst possible time to graffiti a local store front.Miles away a ruthless gang track a young man called Charlie down, trying to eliminate him by framing him for the murder of another. All events slowly draw themselves toward the resort where Kate lives, threatening to tear apart her ordered world. This is a tale that has many layers and many characters. It is not simply a linear story but twists and turns all over the place. While to some it may feel a little drawn out or even slow in places it is still a suspense tale an never forgets that.I can whole heartedly recommend this book as a thrill ride to the finish and it is time that you will not feel wasted by the time you reach the final resolution.I received a free book from Thomas Nelson/Zondervan Fiction Guild in return for an honest review.

Lots of Secrets
Clever and twisty tale of suspense as told through the eyes of a young girl. With a dysfunctional family of characters you either love or hate, the author weaves a story that could be set in a castle. But instead, it's set in a Colorado private resort originally built to hide Japanese Americans who were being interred during WWII. With secret rooms and tunnels and mysterious doors that allow eavesdropping, the book kept me guessing to the end. Maybe a bit heavy on the moralizing between characters near the end, but overall very satisfying.
