Q: Is there any plastic in contact with water or near the water?

Yes, there is a plastic or silicone ring that goes around the inside bottom of the kettle and comes into contact with the water. Also the inside of the lid is plastic.

Q: I see the kettle stamped Germany. Is that where it is made?

Unfortunately like mostly every product nowadays it is made in China. The word Germany you see it refers to the Schott Glass which is actually one of the best lab grade glass available and that is made in Germany, then expoirted to China for assembly. I had it now for over a month and no complaints thus far.

Q: Can it make just 2 cups of tea, not more? I use bottled water and would rather not waste water or tea making more than I need.

Yes, you may make 2 cups of tea. I have not tried less than 4 cups, but the steeper extends down well below the 2-cup level, so tea leaves would be fully submerged. Also, the instruction manual says, "Fill the Glass Tea Kettle with filtered water up to the desired level for the amount of tea you want to brew." Since there's a 2-cup marking, it should work well.

Q: I see others have a timer for brewing after boiling stops. Does this one?

It does not. This will heat the water to the appropriate temperature very quickly, but you'll need a second timer for steeping time once heated.
