Q: Will this work on a rain bird AG-5?

It will work as long as you verify the diameter of the riser extension pipe matches the inlet to the AG-5

Q: How do I know what diameter I need?

Two choices I can think of. Look at the top of the riser body and see if it tells you brand and model. Then you could search that one online for an answer. This would be ideal because you wouldn’t have to do anything until the risers come. Or unscrew the body, pull it out and look at the bottom. I’d suggest a digging a small hole around the body down to the connection point so you will know what yours are like the first time. Then you will probably want to reattach it until your risers arrive. I have 4” rise hunter pro spray bodies. They are 1/2”. I would guess most pop up sprinklers are 1/2”...but that is a guess based on walking thru the irrigation aisle in the hardware store and looking for my pop up bodies. This one works perfectly fine. I have used it to raise my sprinkler heads by various amounts, just cut off an appropriate length.

Q: how much height will this add when installed uncut?

The adapter riser is 2.5"; depends upon how tight you install onto the original riser and the Sprinkler head. Assuming you don't cut any off, I would say about 1.25-1.5".
