Soil and Water Chemistry

Comprehensive, breaks things down if you need chemistry review
This was required for a course I took- it is wonderful that it has so many pictures, and case study examples. I took a soil and water chemistry class after not having taken intro general chemistry in over 5 years. This book assumes a science background and you should have ideas of chemistry 101 concepts from high school at least, but things are explained simply and build up chapter by chapter, so that if you are rusty and need to refresh on basic concepts, you won't be lost if you don't skip to the end. At the same time, while refreshing on chemistry concepts like valence states and ionic charges, the environmental concepts get pretty complex! It has both complicated environmental systems and is easy to read in comparison to other chemistry textbooks! It's appropriate for graduate level work. This book might be easy for a professional chemist, who could reference it quickly for environmental chemistry, but it's also the right amount of challenging and clear for environmental scientists (in non-environmental chemistry fields) who need to understand things like surface mineral chemistry, geologic transformations, redox, etc. I am keeping it since finishing the course- it is a great reference for soil and water research!

Good book for introduction to Water Chem
Very good book. I liked it much more that the classical work from Morel. Morel's book is good, but dark sometimes in some aspects that are shown clearer in this book I review. The price seems fair and you can get a good deal if you get it used.

No color figures in e-book
I rented the kindle version of this book for class. The figures in the kindle version are not in color. This makes any molecular structure figures virtually unreadable as the different atoms are represented by color. Any figure that is in color says, in the figure caption, "see color insert". I don't know what this means, but the color figure isn't anywhere in the book.Additionally, editors should design figures so that they are legible to people who cannot see color or all colors. It is not that hard to use fill, size, and shape to represent difference rather than color.
