Very helpful to prepare for the exam AND as a quick way to gain knowledge on a large subject
The book is primarily aimed at those who are preparing to sit the exam for this subject - and as such it is a very helpful preparation tool. It's layout is modern - lots of colour, pictures, headings and snappy bites of pertinent information which then lead to another page of Q&A to test what one may have learned from the preceding page. There's also a good amount of information on 'how' to set out one's answers in the exam and also 'what' to include in the answers. All-in-all this book is well produced in that it has taken a large subject, broken it down into manageable portions and keeps you on track as you 'study'.The book is also very useful for people like myself who, although not preparing for the exam, want to learn about the history that it covers but either do not have the time, or the inclination, to wade through weighty tomes containing millions of words - and in this, all that I have written above, still applies as this little book has obviously been put together by knowledgeable people who have done a lot of the hard work of wading through masses of information to bring things into a succinct and attractive package which makes the 'learning' a pleasurable exercise. One of the things that I myself have found particularly helpful as I've gone through this book is to learn about some of the archaic laws and beliefs of a past generation and this giving food for thought in comparing the freedoms of our own era and being thankful that I do live in a country/era where those (albeit often hard won through a turbulent history) freedoms have now become a part of our everyday lives.

Does the job
There is something to be said about pedagogical aids and student performance; as there is an indirect link, which appears between the effect of pedagogical aids, percentage of textbook read, and actual course outcomes. It is said that real straight-A students don't study harder—they just study smarter. I believe that these CGP pedagogical aids are rather well done, nonetheless they are no substitute for course notes and other assigned texts. This New Grade 9-1 GCSE History AQA Topic Guide - Elizabethan England, c1568-1603. The era is depicted as the golden age in English history. There is the symbol of Britannia, and often thereafter, to mark the Elizabethan age as a renaissance that inspired national pride through classical ideals, international expansion, and naval triumph over Spain. Historians comment that "England was economically healthier, more expansive, and more optimistic under the Tudors". Returning to the title at hand, the text encompasses brief detailed sections on each topic. There is also plenty of exam guidance and exercise questions. The colouring is fair to OK, as I find it can make the page somewhat overly busy. All in all, a good text, which delivers.

No substitute for making your own notes
This book packs a lot of information packed into relatively few pages. It's divided by topic, with each topic covering two or four pages. The even pages contain revision notes, while the odd pages provide example exam questions.I don't personally find the style of the revision notes ideal for me, but I'm admittedly quite a bit older than the target audience; it's all quite busy, with lots of different fonts, underlining, etc. This may be helpful when writing your own revision notes, but it's just distracting here. More generally, it would be a pity if this book discouraged students from making their own notes, which I fear is a possibility. The questions are more helpful, I feel, and there's a detailed answer section at the back, which provides helpful notes on what the examiners' are looking for.So somewhat of a mixed bag. Overall it's a useful repository of information and practice questions, but shouldn't be seen as a shortcut to doing your own hard graft making your own revision notes.

Very well put together
Elizabeth I was Queen for 44 years and the last monarch from the House of Tudor, and her reign was characterised by religious upheaval, war, the flourishing of English drama and seafaring discoveries. It is not surprising that her time as Queen is a popular choice for examining. This guide from CGP Books takes these fascinating areas of study and breaks them down into manageable chunks.Students will find this book will complement their own notes really well as there are copious examples and exercises as well as exam style questions for them to practice on. They provide a great way for friends to test each other and also parents can quiz their children as there is a detailed answer section at the back.Rather than lists of dates and facts, each page has well laid out notes, with plenty of annotations and diagrams so that the information isn't dry or boring. Nothing is dumbed down either and it is a good book to dip in and out of. Students will find this a very useful text- highly recommended.

individual research will be required by the student to understand deeper in the topics.
I purchased this for my child to aid him with his studies in History. I wanted him to understand the methodology with the History studies. There is a lot of material written and does cover the topics which he may not cover in his class with aid him with exam techniques.I do feel it is showing the student a single way of studying, eg underlining sentences. The topics are mostly a few pages enough to get the gist of the topic.Individual research will be required by the student to understand deeper in the topics. What is good is that there are essay examples in the back, where all the answers are.I believe the History book will help my son, hard work, practise and study is the way to good grades.
