GU Original Sports Nutrition Energy Gel is the energy gel that started it all. In 1993, Dr. Bill Vaughn developed the world’s first energy gel to help his daughter perform better during ultra-marathons, and GU has been helping to propel the world’s most successful extreme athletes to success ever since. GU Energy Gel sustains all forms of athletic activity with a highly compact, portable, and calorie-dense packet that is loaded with carbohydrates that can be rapidly absorbed. Branched-chain amino acids limit muscle fiber damage and increase speed of recovery, and extra electrolytes help maintain water balance. Some flavors feature caffeine to increase concentration. While the original formula has been tweaked and evolved over the years, the end result is still the same: GU Energy Gels fuel the best endurance athletes in the world. GU Original Energy Gel comes in a wide variety of good tasting flavors. Each packet contains 450mg of Amino acids,100 calories, and at least 21g total carbs. Review: This flavour is my favourite and it has 40mg of caffeine for later in 3-5 hour rides so it hits both my late ride taste needs and caffeine needs and energy needs. Strawberry Banana and Lemon Lime (& peanut butter) do not have any caffeine in them. Orange, Vanilla, Chocolate, Triberry and Plain all have 20mg of caffeine per packet. GU's Espresso Love flavor has 40mg of caffeine. Caffeine consumption during exercise improves performance in several ways: it sharpens focus and perks you up; but more importantly, it helps the body produce more power, reduce the pain of hard efforts, and may even tap fat for fuel during exercise. All of this prolongs your ability to exercise at a high intensity. We use just enough caffeine to jump start this benefit and no more. (From the GU Energy website). There might be other flavors out there but just check the website to be sure. **Q: How long do these stay good? When do they expire? I don't see an expiration date on the outside of my box...** A: When checking our stock for an expiration date we find they do not list an expiration date on the box. We have find they say these are best before 11/2015. Quite a few articles we have found say that these are still good past the best before date, however we would recommend consuming these before that date to be safe. **Q: what is expiration date on 24 pack of Peanut butter??** A: That is a manufacturing question. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review *by C***2 on 27 September 2024* This flavour is my favourite and it has 40mg of caffeine for later in 3-5 hour rides so it hits both my late ride taste needs and caffeine needs and energy needs. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review *by D***D on 8 June 2025* The best for endurance rides ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review *by R***C on 20 January 2026* These are really good.
