Is this a suitable substitute for the now-discontinued valvoline modern engine? how well does it prevent carbon build-up on di engines?

My mechanic buddy said this is marketing nonsense and just use regular oil. How would one tell the difference?

All of these oils like Valvoline and Mobil one and Quaker State and Castrol that day full synthetic are not full synthetic oils. They are perhaps 30% synthetic. Because of a loophole in the law the company’s can say they a full synthetic but are not. The only 100% pure synthetic motor oils that I’m aware of are Motul which is made in France and can be gotten on Amazon. Only come in liter bottle or 5 liter bottles. Redline which is 100% Ester base oils and is a group 5 synthetic. It’s made in California and you can get it on Amazon. It’s not sold in most stores like Wal Mart. And Amsoil which is a group 4 PAO derived synthetic base oil and you can get it on Amazon or their website or racing shops. And when you see the prices of these oils you will understand why this other stuff in the shelf like Mobil 1 and Royal Purple aren’t 100% synthetic base oils. They are what’s called group 3 hydrocracked base oil with some group 4 or 5 added to it. They are terrific oils but they aren’t true 100% synthetic oils. It should be illegal to sale them as such. It’s not. In Europe it is indeed illegal to sale them as such bevause that’s not what they are. There is 1 exception. Castrol European Formula 0w30 aka German Castrol is a 100% PAO derived synthetic oil. Some of it is made in Germany and some in Belgium. You can get it at most auto zones or other stores like this. Look on the back of the bottle and it will either say made in Germany or Made in Belgium. That’s the real deal. It is fantastic oil. The old Castrol Syntec 0w30 was green in color. I don’t think the newer stuff is green anymore but it’s still the same oil. So that’s the only 100% pure synthetic you can get right off the shelf. Eneos racing oils are also Ester based oils. You can get it at Napa. The regular Eneos is group 3 and 4 mic like most of the others but it’s good stuff too. If you drive a vehicle that calls for a 5w30 or 10w30 or a 5w40 or 10w40 you can use Castrol 0w30 European formula. I think it’s called Castrol edge now. It’s way thicker than most other 30 weight oils so it can be used for engines that call for 30 or 40 weight. I would use it. It’s really phenomenal stuff. It’s more expensive but hey you get what you pay for. When something costs more it doesn’t alwYs mean that it better but sometimes it does. Mobil 1 European Formula 0w40 is also great stuff. I think it’s still a group 3 and 4 mix but Porsche recommends it and that means it’s good stuff. ALL plain Jane Conventional oils are what’s called group 2 oils. They are all good. They work just as well it’s just they can’t take as much punishment as these other. They are more prone to thermal breakdown and sheering for es that reduce the viscosity. They just aren’t as tough. They are less refined if you will. They don’t flow as easily in cold temperatures and have lower flash points. That’s why they always said to change your oil every 3000 miles. If you are constantly in stop and go tragic and short trips then yes I would change coventional oil every 3000 miles and if not you really can go to 5000 without problem. Just use a good brand like Penzoil. Oh and another group 3 and 4 oil you can get off the shelf is Penzzoil Ultra Platinum. Not Pennxoil Platinum but Pnnzoil ULTRA Platinum. I assure you they aren’t the same thing. But the Ultra Platinum is perhaps the best ‘synthetic’ group 3 and 4 off the shelf oil you can get. I use Amazon Badics high mileage Full Synthetic 5w30. It’s made by Warren distributors in Nebraska and they have been making motor oils since the 1930’s so it is also very very good stuff.

The dexos website states both the 0w20 and 5w30 viscosities are dexos 1 gen 3 licensed. however, valvoline's website states they are only gen 2?

This oil provide very good service and oil life .

The best way to go synthetic, you'll get more mileage and better engine protection and fuel mileage

This is what you use for your vehicles. This is going to give you the extra protection. It's going to give you better engine performance for the simple fact that it has better additives in it. And it will not turn acidic, like regular oil. Well, it'll actually get a much better and longer oil. Usage. It does give me much more miles. It's been a regular oil and the better lubrication. It does take the noise out of your engine. It's just better lubrication, better engine performance, better mileage, that's just the way to go. You can see a difference in your oil filter as well. Highly recommend this one. Keep your engines, sturdy solid, quiet. It's the way to go and use a good oil filter as well. Highly recommend it

Amazing product

Used it in a 2014 Subaru (mom hand me down with 70k) with low mileage that had some staining down in oil filler tube. After 4000 miles staining was almost gone! Going to use it in my 2021 F150 from now

The local oil change place may do things in a jiffy, but they failed to replace the oil drain plug gasket the last time they worked on my car. It leaked oil all over the place. So I am committed to doing my own oil changes again. After paying $130 even with a coupon, imagine my relief in seeing Valvoline Extended Protection Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil 5 Quart priced at less than half of that amount. I will be saving upwards of $60 each oil change even after buying the filter and other supplies. Valvoline has always been my oil of choice, because I know they make products of the highest quality, and won't let me down.
