Milliamps, in this case an increase in battery capacity is not a problem. The cell chemistry requires a fairly smart charge system. It should charge with a specific charge profile with a fairly wide range of cell capacities. Applies to the stand alone charger also.

Why does the metal leads show up on different sides; in different pictures?

Front or Rear of the battery. Only goes in one way.

Will it use (fit, as in, line up identically) the same charger that the Canon Elph SD1000 provided with the Canon NB-4L battery pack?

Don't buy this...It doesn't hold charge even for 2 hrs, even when you are not using
