Typically the center contact/socket define the sex of the connector/adapter. This is a female adapter with external threads. Most would consider this a receptacle (female) adapter with a center socket (female). Sorry....didn't mean to go all "nerdy" on you. I guess the simple answer would be yes to your question

The needle seems too long for me to screw the connector onto the cable. I'm afraid to apply pressure because I don't want to bend the wire.

Cut the middle wire off some if it’s too long.the wire has to go inside the female fitting make sure you start the wire in the center hole before you screw the male and female together.hope this helps you
