Q: Is there a difference between the ultra and the ultra II?

Yes, and they are incompatible with each other.Amazon has a way to enter your refrigerator model number at the top of the page to insure compatibility.The Ultra II is required starting mid-2015. It has a threaded fitting where it enters its socket. The original Ultra had two stems sticking out with o-rings, plus a third stem as a key.

Q: This says it lasts for 6 months but after 2 months our fridge tells us to replace. What’s the deal with that? Does it actually need to be replaced?

The six month rule is just given, because of an average consumption of water in a typical household. If you fit this profile, they 6 months would be the right timing. However, a filter is good for a determined amount of water flowing through for filtering. If it just sits there and is not used, it can last forever! I never drink water from the fridge dispenser, so my filter gets no usage at all. In that case, I just simply reset the timer to zero, and done.
