.com When the consensus is that you're the new Dylan, it's your prerogative to rewrite the record industry's rules. So in 1994, the same year Beck had major-label hits with "Loser" and the album Mellow Gold, he saw fit (and was allowed by his label, Geffen) to release three other records on various indie labels. While none challenged Beck's "real" album in quality or sales, Stereopathetic Soul Manure is his most successful collection of unpolished toss-offs. Collecting various low-fi recordings made between 1988 and '93, the record alternates between folkie strumming, pedal-steel country, noise-guitar freakouts, and bizarre soundbites. Not essential, but it has its charms. --Roni Sarig

Stereopathetic Soulmanure - awesomely rare classic Beck songs
This CD came as a nice surprise - there are like 26 songs/recordings that are classic Beck. I love it ~ not things you would find on a regular CD. These did not get any radio play. They are like little treasures that are fantastic. I love the short commentaries from the early 90's where he's saying what's happening at the time while listening to MTV.Really a must have for true Beck fans. Thumbs way up.

True Beck Charm
Finally a Beck album that captures his quirky humor and his folk blues roots accurately. From classics that would go on to be revived (such as Rowboat and Thunder Peel) to the songs that were rearranged and died shortly after (Tazergun), this gives a broad range of what Beck was into before giving it to us.It might not be perfectly what you expect, but it'll make you feel and laugh.

For the Beck fan that has to have it all . . .
Good rare cd from Beck. Some of these tracks were released in other formats, some are only available here. Not for the casual Beck fan, but a nice peace of history to show how refreshingly odd this artist could be and what passed as a "must have/weird" record back in the '90s.

so if you're a real Beck fan you'll enjoy the hell out of it
It's Beck, so if you're a real Beck fan you'll enjoy the hell out of it. Chances are you're already privy to whats on it if you're thinking about ordering it, but if you're not 100% familiar, it's gonna grow on you just like ALL of his stuff does lol.

Never underestimate the heart of a musical genius
Raw, uncut, barely produced, beautiful, rockin, rollin, soulful, weird, anarchic, and wild as all get out. Beck lyrics are equal parts wtf, clear, funny, and heartfelt.Stereopathetic has everything... simple acoustic numbers like Rowboat (Johnny Cash covered this one), Puttin' It Down (great lyrics), Satan Gave Me A Taco (hilarious storytelling), and Modesto (beautiful song with a nice slide guitar solo at the end). It has hard rocking elements like the first track Pink Noise, Thunder Peel, & Taser Gun (another hilarious storytelling format). In between the songs are brief recordings of random funny asides (i.e. "I'm an alien from another sphere hooked on drugs"), a leaf blower, some classical music, a harpsichord I think, and anything else you can imagine. Beck also recorded some homeless dudes singing solo or with him on a couple of the shorter tunes like "No Money No Honey."Stereopathetic Soulmanure came out just before Mellow Gold with little fanfare. I'm a huge Beck fan and never heard of it being released at that time... just stumbled on it browsing an ATX record store around 1996. This album isn't as polished as his others. The song listings on the back lose their order after the 5th or 6th tune. The quality isn't exactly stellar, esp on the demos and live recordings. But as you will hear post purchase, it doesn't need any of that. It's an avant-garde masterpiece. If you dig Beck's early stuff you'll likely love this.

Beck has been a genius the whole time. What an evolution of the soul of an artist. I love it!

Beck is amazing.
This album is from the best era of Beck's music. You should buy this if you like Mellow Gold and Golden Feelings.

Good ol' weird, young Beck
Beck is trying to be very raw and weird on this early cut. The music isn't great or even loveable, but what's interesting is the history. This is kind of for hardcore Beck fans only, otherwise go for Mellow Gold.

It's the dog's
I've never felt comfortable with talking about someone's "best" work. I'm not a musician and I don't have the vocabulary. But I *can* talk about a favourite and feel confident. And this is my favourite Beck. It's raw, it has punk energy (without being punk rock), and I love it from soup to nuts.I like the smoother Beck as well, but this one is the dog's bollocks.

"The Spirit has certainly moved me"
What the other bloke said is true, this album is not high quality recording. It is, however, very high quality music. I think it portrays how Beck's musical abilities were already above average even before he had the luxuries of recording studios and all the musical facilities most other artists have grown up with. To me, this is probably the most inspiring album i own. It provides excellent motovation for when you just feel like giving up.
