I placed it right near the hole, which is in the kitchen, and instead of goldfish crackers I tried a piece of Nature Valley oatmeal bar with peanut butter on top. Let me tell you...not only did I catch one mouse with the trap....but I been catching a mouse every single day!! Its day 4 now. They are all little brown mice. Crazy adorable! But seriously I am wondering how many are actually in my house and when the trap will STOP working lol Its getting a bit annoying and routine finding a mouse in the trap within hours of placing new bait. Washing it isn't fun either. My tips: FIND a hole where the mice are coming to and from and place the trap there. Placing the traps where you seen a mouse or droppings out in the open isn't good enough. At their access point you'll catch them, guaranteed. Also unless you aren't able to check on the trap often, NO need to drill extra holes! In fact PLEASE don't drill holes much bigger than whats already there or they will try to escape/chew through them and get stuck!! This happened to me when first trying to test if bigger holes made a difference for scent and provide them with more air. When I found my first catch, poor thing was halfway out of the trap with its bottom stuck. I couldn't believe it as the holes I made were no bigger than a dime in diameter! I had to carefully break the trap to pry it free (outdoors of course). Anyway after that failed I been using a trap as is ever since, and its been catching mice. Run a thin amount of peanut butter in front of the door as instructed and they will smell it. I probably caught a dozen in the same trap before this happened. I feel like the doors are the least little bit thinner now than long ago, but even if so they'll do the job. So I consider these pretty reliable, yet not perfect. Considering the price and effectiveness I would give them a 4 1/2 if possible. For me there are two things that make live traps challenging, and it is no fault of the traps themselves. First, you need to be reasonably vigilant, because if you do not notice any sounds are or not present you might overlook a trapped mouse until hours or days later, making a very unpleasant result for you and the rodent. Similarly, the second issue is also that I do not want them to suffer, yet simply escorting them to the edge of the woods or elsewhere nearby does not get rid of them. I actually find myself driving off in the middle of the night delivering a mouse to a remote creek area else they are highly likely to return. For bait I used to use a little peanut butter or bits of cheese, but I've found that just a bit of dry pet kibble is good enough. If you have a rodent on the loose looking for a free meal it doesn't take much. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ So far...fed not captured (UPDATE: 4/4 caught) *by D***D on March 8, 2012* Just purchased these traps and as soon as they arrived baited them with peanut butter per the instructions and placed around last mouse dropping locations. Within 4 hours (and within 1 hour of leaving that part of the house) I heard a clatter and upon checking found an empty trap upside down. As other reviews have documented it seems I caught a mouse but once it realized it was trapped it either threw itself around in a panic or purposefully (if I have genius mice) rolled the trap to its side twice making the trap door swing wide open as the roof became the floor. So far the mouse has gotten a snack and likely a scare. To try and prevent the same thing happening again if the mouse tries for more peanut butter I've wedged heavy objects against two of the traps so they are pinned against the wall and used double-sided tape on the other. I promise I will update this review if the new setup is more successful, until then the door mechanism and lightweight trap body seem too easily defeated. ********* UPDATE: After losing the first mouse it took a few days but we did soon catch another, this one was either small enough that it couldn't roll the trap or the double-sided tape held the trap down. After catching the smaller mouse I had a few run-ins where I was face to face with the big one in my kitchen, but never found it in the trap. One day I chased it around the pantry and saw it run under a pocket door into the wall, I placed one of these traps so the mouth directly covered this entrance and amazingly 2 hours later the same mouse was in the trap. A few days later my roommate thought he saw another mouse go into the same space under the pocket door and since I'd told him how we caught the big one he put the trap back in the same spot, that night there were two mice in the same trap together. Since then we haven't seen hide nor hair (nor dropping) so I think we removed them all. I increased my rating to 4 stars but that may be a bit generous since we had to be both very patient as well as "hunt" the mice ourselves with the traps. Only 1 of the 4 wandered into the trap in the recommended placement, but in the end we did catch them all and we able to release them far away alive.
