The fan we replaced did not have a remote, so that will take a bit of getting used to, but not having the pull chain hanging down helps my husband from walking into it all the time AND it looks so much more appealing. I did take someone else's advice about having the Hunter logo face AWAY from the door and I am so happy I did, its a little large and in silver with black, it stands out a lot. Ok so onto the install. This is fairly easy as long as you have a basic idea of how electrical wiring works. White to white, green to green, etc. PLEASE make sure you have the circuit breaker off so you don't electrocute yourself! It took my husband about 60-90 minutes to install the whole thing. The directions were simple and easy to follow. We tried to test that the fan was working once that portion was installed. Keep in mind, the lights were not hooked up yet, so it was NOT a complete circuit. We found out, the unit does NOT function unless the entire thing is put together. We spent a solid 20 minutes up and down the stairs and adjusting wires. So avoid the hassle and install the whole thing and hope for the best! If you need to take parts off, it really isn't that hard. My husband installed the fan blades without the washers and I was worried they would be extra noisy, but no issue. I then removed the receiver and wired the fan directly and it worked, making it apparent that the receiver was bad. I contacted Hunter customer service, and they were responsive. After confirming the problem was the receiver, and providing my proof-of-purchase, they let me know that because this item was out of warranty (1 year for all parts outside of the motor), I would have to purchase a new receiver for $55, which is over 1/3 the price I paid for the entire fan. So now I am considering purchasing an aftermarket remote kit or ditching this fan all together. I needed a fan that didn't drop too far down from my ceilings (which aren't very tall, about 8'), had more than one light fixture (given that so many fans today can't handle high-wattage lights), and also had a remote. These look nice, and they're a good value. Perhaps most importantly, they work well as fans. The instructions were clear, so that helped the installation along. I'd never installed a fan before, but this went fairly smoothly (though I'm sure it helped that I was replacing existing fans). The main thing that stops me from giving five stars is the remote. Sometimes I have to hold it quite close to the fan for it to work, and I don't have very large rooms. I'm not sure why that is the case - sometimes turning it on is very easy, but turning it off is more difficult. Or vice versa, it's a bit annoying.
