The Sigiri Graffiti are an amazing poetical archive
I urgently need this book. I read it in Sigiriya in August 2005. It is the best ever presentation of these Sigiri Graffiti, small Sinhalese poems inscribed on the Mirror Wall and commenting upon the Sigiri Ladies on the Sigiriya Rock. The book contains 650 odd poems in Sinhala, both Latin and traditional spelling, plus English translations, plus abundant linguistic notes, plus a long introduction on the language and the poetics of these 8th-10th centuries. The only shortcoming of Paranavitana's translations and presentation is that he neglects the Buddhist context, Buddhist content and Buddhist debate in the poems. As far as I know a new edition came out in Sri Lanka under the auspices of UNESCO, but where can we find it?Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University of Paris Dauphine, University of Paris I Pantheon Sorbonne
