the tough armor mb998ip-b has a solid metal housing with removable trays and an effective, modern cooling for maximum stability, speed and reliability. as a particularly compact storage solution it can take up to 8x 2.5 - record "sas / sata hot swap drives with 5mm in only a 5.25 7mm height" drive bay. the two back minisas hd (sff-8643) connections of the backplane module designed to connect to modern raid cards very easily, simultaneously reduce the number of required cables and offer a higher bandwidth than sata connectors. the two 40mm adjustable fans and the metal housing with vents cool your drives effectively, thus contributing even in demanding conditions to a longer life. the fans offer three settings between which users can choose; high (full power), low (quiet operation) and off support of memory density and compatibility to offer the maximum (off) .to the tough armor mb998ip-b 8 x 7mm 2.5 "sas / sata ssds or hard disks and requires this only a single conventional external 5.25 "drive bay (dvd-rom tray). due to the use of 2x minisas hd (sff-8643) connections, the backplane module can be controlled by a raid card and can thus particularly well in raid 6 or raid 10 using composites. the minisas hd connector is designed to simplify the installation and significantly reduce the number of cables required - so you only need two minisas hd cable instead of eight sata cables. minisas hd p without data loss, so your data is always kept safe and clean. the use of minisas hd makes mb998ip-b compatible with a wide range of sas expanders and raid cards, enabling a smooth deployment in enterprise environments.

This DOES NOT fit normal 2.5 drives....this unit is made for Solid State SATA drives ( like samsung evo, sandisk, etc... ). Super easy to install and use, there is also a fan switch on the back of the unit to control the speed. Fans at medium speed were pretty quiet...but on high they were noticeable. If noise is a factor for you, then I suggest replacing the fans this unit comes with. Also note the HDD activity lights remain on all the time and will blink OFF when activity is happening with the SSD.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Rugged" is an apt description

Crazy how well built this thing is for how dense it can pack in the SSDs. I use it in a mobile workstation for an SSD RAID (no moving parts to jostle when it gets lugged around between locations) so the one downside to this unit is that it's HEAVY. I read the physical specs before buying, but it was still surprising. Otherwise great, a totally unique product from what I can tell. And the fans appear to be a standard form factor so I will replace them with some Noctuas to make it even quieter (the stock fans are not that loud, I'm just optimizing). My only nitpick is that I wish it had locking doors, but that might not even be possible with how small the trays are.
