Q: Are these the funny looking sunglasses that old people wear?

Yes they are just a touch less opaque. I'm in my late 30s and wear them for extra anti-aging SPF coverage. Keep in mind that it is a cheap work around from having to get prescription sunglasses. It protects your crows feet areas perfectly from the sun. You will look older with these on - they're functional not stylish.

Obviously, what the description means is cellulose acetate, an ester that is a kind of plastic. Cellulose acetate has been known since the mid-1800s, has been commonly manufactured from wood pulp and other raw organic materials since shortly after 1900, and was often used until the 1950s to make fabric and textiles before cheaper alternatives such as nylon that were sourced from petrochemicals. Today it is often used for eyeglass frames and, in this case, inexpensive optically flat lenses.

Q: What is the uvb rating? are they very dark? my eyes are soo light sensitive, i need very dark lenses for driving. thanks!

The claimed UV400 rating implies blocking of 100% of all wavelengths shorter than 400nm, including UVA (320-400nm), UVB (280-320nm), and UVC (100-280nm). UV light is mostly invisible but can have damaging health effects. The divisions among UVA, UVB, and UVC are somewhat arbitrary, and in general the shorter wavelengths can do more damage more quickly but it is the longer wavelengths that penetrate the atmosphere to a greater degree all the way to the ground, so blocking all UV is what you want rather than worrying about UVA versus UVB specifically.Darkness of the lenses in blocking visible light is essentially unrelated to the effectiveness blocking invisible (UV) light. As a practical matter, blocking of visible light is an important goal of sunglasses in improving your ability to drive in bright sunlight.
