I have used the Aveda men's grooming clay for years and recently moved to Highland because of some ads that said it was awesome. Turns out that that I was missing with Aveda was longevity. The Aveda product simply disappeared when I got hot, or it was very humid, or it rained a little. Basically any moisture would make it simply disappear. I wanted something with better hold, and I didn't know until I tried something else. However, the Highland glacial clay is the polar opposite. It is made of wax and it is very sticky. Not only does it stay on your hair, but you have to rub it off your hands with a towel because soap and water have no effect on it. Also, I would pull out my hair when putting it on. Once I put it on my hair, my hair was flat and that was the way it stayed. It was simply too much. I was staring right down on the Goldilocks problem, so I did what everyone does in 2024, I conducted an online search, developed a list of candidates, and read reviews. I was stumped with several products, so I decided to buy the most popular one--Quicksand. This stuff is just right. It goes on pretty easily without pulling my hair out. Like Highland, you have to warm it up in your hands, but this is more clay and less wax. It lasts all day no matter the weather. It does not look slick, shiny, or greasy. Like the name implies, it leaves your hair dry looking. I put it on when my hair is barely damp. It makes my already thin hair a little flat at first. But over the morning, my hair rises to the desired look. Unlike Aveda or Highland, if the wind blows my hair, for example, I can run my hand through my hair without destroying the hold or the look. Sometimes when i first get up in the morning, my hair is like Doc Brown from Back to the Future, but all I have to do is push it back down and I'm good until I shower and start all over again. I don’t know what the "dry shampoo" thing is about, and I almost did not buy it because that was in the title. I would recommend that you give this a shot unless you want the slick or shiny look. See if you agree.

I use a clay or paste daily. This brand has a great hold with the formula allowing for wet hair to dry properly in place without the “wet look”. Hold last all day very easily and allow allows for easy manipulation throughout the day for the look that you’re looking for. I would recommend this product very easily and love the fact that the scent is very very light. A little bit goes a very long way and a tub of this would last many many months maybe even a year. Gives your hair a slight grainy feel and it works very well. Works well with dyed hair.

Keeps hair in place. Nice smell. Not oily. Expensive.

Likely one of the worst hair products I’ve ever used. Having a thick and manageable hair, I have tried various products. This “Quicksand” product might be accurate in its title as it makes you feel the dread of being in quicksand. To be succinct, the product leaves a terrible feeling within your hair, much like you’ve spread children’s moon sand or kinetic sand through it. The fragrance is mild, but caught throughout the day, and it is undesirable and unnatural smelling. It does nothing positive for hair texture, rather making it appear more dull, thin, and stringy more than anything else. It is non-greasy as is indicated, but to the degree that it makes the hair feel unnatural when you run your hands through it. It bears no significance in its ability to hold or control style. Lastly, the ingredient list for such a “high-end” product should not be this listless and may be the reason it is not very good. I was hoping this was a game changing product for daily use, but it became a source of frustration and disappointment instead. I would not recommend this product to someone hoping to have a good styling product for every day use.

I have fine straight hair that I cut to a medium short length and like to style with a modern messy/textured look. This product is not for me. Everybody has different hair though so I’ve tried to lay out some honest details of the product by category below. Hold: I would not label this product as high hold. My previous medium hold product would allow me to redirect a pretty tame cowlick and this product simply doesn’t. I can best describe this product as adding a soft grit to your hair that allows for some styling. I think this would provide more hold and shape for those with somewhat thick and wavy hair that just needs occasional redirection. Texture: I understand what everyone is saying about this product not being greasy. It certainly isn’t a pomade or gel that will leave residue. It feels like applying an even layer of gritty clay to your hair (my best comparison is moon-sand both as you scoop it and when it is applied). There is no obvious shine to the product and it does absorb oils because of the diatomaceous earth. So if you have oily hair this could be a good product. I was not a fan of the clay/sand feeling even though I typically like some grit in my products. This made my hair feel dry and I really didn’t like the thin clay and grit feeling left on my hands whenever I applied the product or readjusted my hair. (It does wash off quickly) Fragrance: The product doesn’t do not leave a fragrance after applied as far as I can tell. But the fragrance of the product during application is the same as rancid oil mixed with flour. There are a lot of products that can be like this when no fragrance is added so it’s not a huge deal but did surprise me when I opened it up. Application and removal: The product is slightly firm to break into but then softens quickly into a play-dough texture and separates quickly when rubbed in the palms. I kept on needing to apply more than I thought I would need to in order to provide any lift on my straight hair at all. The product washes out just fine with water and definitely cleans out completely with shampoo. Overall take! If you have straight or fine hair that doesn’t hold its shape this product is not going to be your styler. At most, you could use it to apply some texture (like a sea salt spray or hair powder) alongside a shaping product. I think I could recommend this product for those with hair that they can already comb into a basic shape if they’d like to add some grit or sandy texture and a slight hold (especially if their hair tends to get naturally greasy). But at $14/oz a hair powder product or maybe even dry shampoo will do a lot more for most. If you are looking to go for a modern messy/textured look like a textured fringe or blowout taper this product is NOT for you.

I was a little on the fence about ordering this product due to the mixed reviews and the cost, but I'm very glad I did. The texture of the stuff is smooth, yet has the smallest amount of graininess mixed in. I use a swatch about the size of a nickel and vigorously rub between my palms until it feels warm and the substance has dissipated—it almost feels like nothing is on your hands at that point, but it's there. I then work my hands through my hair—usually dry—and immediately the hair groups together and becomes textured, but still feels dry to the touch, with no shine or greasiness. I'm then able to arrange my hair into the style I prefer, and it simply stays where I put it. A quick rinse of the hands with water and I'm done. Over the course of the day, gravity will of course make the hair settle a bit, but you can simply fluff it up again lightly with your fingers as needed (which isn't often). I have straight, short/medium length hair, on the thicker side for reference. I usually used either Crew Matte Clay or Crew Fiber before finding this stuff. This product is better. Crew would eventually make the hair feel greasy, especially the next day. With Quicksand this doesn't happen, and sometimes my hair actually looks better after a night of sleeping on it! It may not be for everyone, but if you want a decent, medium hold, zero shine, zero greasiness, that lasts all day, you've just found what you're looking for.

Unlike anything else I’ve ever tried.. believe me I’ve tried them all.. IMO I love it. I have low skin fade with side parting. Like to have it natural look. It’s leaves your hair really soft & rework-able. Doesn’t fail halfway thru the day. Strong, but can restyle easily . Bit pricey, but worth it. Use with a good quality sea salt spray. Works great..

If there is any product that holds your hair in place, easy to remove, organic and works fabulously well on thin hairs, it's hanz de fuko quicksand. Amazing product
