Action and intrigue on almost every page
When Julian Mercer’s wife was brutally murdered, he became emotionally unbalanced and was forced to retire from the SAS. Now, working with his old SAS team, he’s a recovery specialist, tasked with retrieving kidnap victims safely. In Chicago for a job that fell through, Mercer hears a woman’s scream. In an alley, he finds a young woman holding the body of a man who has been shot. Before he can explain his presence, the police arrive and arrest him because he’s armed. It gets sorted out, and later, a media magnate contacts him for a job—he’s the father of the young woman, and he wants to hire Mercer and his team to protect her. Mercer has concerns about the job, but takes it anyway. The more he’s associated with the case, the more he knows that his client, the daughter, and just about everyone connected with the case, are withholding important information.Plots, counterplots, and intrigue inhabit every page of Condemned by G.K. Parks. Well-plotted and full of action, this is a good read for a slow weekend.

Round About Tedious
About half way through the book I skipped to the last 30 pages. The content of the book became tedious to this reader.

Welks snapped. "Bullocks," Mercer muttered...
Funny how one unique word can bring it all back in this hard-edged suspense story having a thoroughly British protagonist. Mystery was a quick read and seemingly ran the gamut as to themes of kamikaze drivers, frame-ups, extortion, personal vendettas, contract killers, kidnappings, torture, revenge, blackmail, police corruption, missing evidence, you name it! Good book and did keep my interest.

Great read
This is a great and interesting book. The author knows how to write an intriguing book. All of the books I've read have been page turners. I hope you try reading the Alexis Parker books they are very good!

Powerful, but bleak and not my cup of tea
I can't fault the quality of the book, which is why I give it four stars. Despite the fact that the writing style is American the author even got the English swear words right! My problem is I really disliked just about everything else:I found the crude sexual references offensive (I'm not a prude: give me a GOOD sex scene any time!) and they really did not add anything to the storyline. The main character was way too bleak with practically no redeeming features. He should have seen a shrink a long time ago, and he certainly should not be carrying a gun.The idea of a team of professionals sticking around with a guy who is a serious liability is hard to believe.Towards the end I found myself wanting to get to the end as fast as possible, not to see who the 'baddie' is but to be able to move on to a book more in line with my reading preferences.
