I love the Downey Free and Clear but this delivery was very badly packaged and the large heavy bottle leaked into the covering plastic bag and then all over the box and kitchen floor as I was trying to get the bag off. All in all this is a very bad way to package large, heavy containers of liquid

We benefit from super-soft water, so a tiny bit goes quite a long way in our HE washer. I had stopped using it for about a year because I dropped it and busted the cap, so using what's left is a bit of a hassle, but recently I started using it again and noticed how the laundry is much softer than when I use Persil. (Love Persil, by the way.)This detergent adds a particular softness to fleece garments. I can't speak to stain-fighting, really, because anything that's messy gets pre-treated with other products.

It cleans well and doesn't smell like chemicals. Fine.

Overall, this is a pretty good detergent, one that is probably best suited to people who strongly dislike scents, are sensitive to added fragrance, or someone with a skin allergy. I have been using more environmentally friendly laundry products for a few years, I usually use brands like Method, Attitude, Seventh Generation, Vaska, etc. The eco credentials are very similar overall to the brands I use. Personally, I am most concerned with the detergents being less damaging, and more compact packaging, recyclable. I don't have sensitivity to fragrances, or skin reactions to laundry products, so that's not important to me, though I do think a lot of conventional detergents have gotten ridiculous with the levels of heavy fragrance. I don't feel like I need to smell my laundry from 20 feet away, like a Gain detergent I tried recently.I do most of my laundry on cold water, in a HE washer, with extremely hard water. This detergent seems like it is more suitable for warm, hot, and very hot water washing, but it rinsed out okay and appears to have done as good of a job cleaning as anything else. Well enough, not miraculous. The detergent is more or less unscented, the laundry just comes out of the washer smelling nice and clean. I like that the bottle is clear so I can see when it's almost out.The instructions are more complicated than usual - it gives different ml values based on the dirtiness, local water hardness, but there are no markings on the lid. I find that I can usually get away with less detergent than they say to use with any brand (more does not necessarily clean better but it can gunk up your machine), so I just used a full lid-cup on a load, which will probably get me more a little more than the 21 loads stated. I'm not sure if Euro washers come with measurements on the machine, or if people normally use a separate measuring cup with detergent, but that's too much trouble for me, personally. The spout is also not like the newer ones that are designed to funnel in the drippings off the cup (which is a feature I really like).Overall, the value is not there with this product compared to similar products that have the same environmental standards. It's not even competitive with prestige brands like The Laundress or Caldrea. I can get 2-3x the loads for half the money usually. This is an import product, so there are probably extra costs for the seller due to that, and I have no idea if detergent is generally more expensive overseas.I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
