5G Wireless: A Comprehensive Introduction

Excellent initial read on 5G for the casual or engineering level audiance.
An excellent book for an initial introduction and general understanding of the technology. The great aspect of the book is it starts off covering the history from 1G to 5g and the relationships among the various generations. The book does a great job outlining all the acronyms and industry specifications involved for additional reference. The use cases are fantastic for the various deployment models of 5G and alone are worth the read. Smart cities, Industry 4.0, Smart farms etc. Gives the reader some creative ideas. There are some deep technical sections on relating to wireless transmission, signal coding, modulation and antenna theory with lots of formulas so if you are not familiar with that aspect of the technology the reading may be a little dry/daunting. For those familiar with or have studied signal/modulation subjects in the past it makes a great refresher or reinforce some of the technical aspects and is outlined very well. It was a great refresher for me and easy to understand. My only criticism is on the SDN and NFV sections. The SDN section appeared out of date(Openflow) and no real use cases were mentioned. Also, I believed having those sections right in the middle before the more technical radio related sections breaks up the “wireless studying” mindset. The book may flow easier by putting all the build out of Core, base station and RAN related topics towards the end once the reader understands all the technical components and then put it all together with a 5G solution utilizing SDN/NFV with RAN and a couple of use cases. It kind of drops off at the end on RAN and Air Interfaces with no "putting it all together end to end” walk through of a use case. Overall a great read, I learned much and a keeper for reference use.

Current and Easy to read
This is the best book I have on 5G and telecommunications for two reasons: It is the only book in which when a new term is used it is not assumed that the reader knows what the term means and what the acronyms stand for. Also, a book in which liberal use is made of figures to illustrate ideas. This makes it easy to follow the content. The book is nicely edited, so it is not repetitive and verbose and ideas are nicely organized. It is an excellent starting point for readers who are either new to the subject or using it as a refresher.Since 5G is becoming an important factor in our lives, there are many who come from diverse fields and need a fast introduction (my background is in applied mechanics) . And, interestingly, the material presented in the book is neither neither stale nor trivial or superficial. It has a lot of good substance of current interest in it.I wholeheartedly recommend the book and express my gratitude to the author.
