Walt Disney's Donald Duck Gift Box Set: The Pixilated Parrot & Terror of the Beagle Boys

This set includes two previously released Hard Covers in the Carl Barks Library in a sturdy Slip Case for the first time. The books are durable and sold separately for $29.99 each. So besides the beautiful slip case you also save $10 on the retail price, besides whatever Discount you receive from Amazon. The books are over 200 pages each and include a short bio on Carl Barks and a list of where each story was cullled from. They also include a section of essays from a variety of Barks experts called Story Notes. One essay for each story. My suggestion on reading these is to read each individual story then flip to the back of book immediately after and read the corresponding story notes. The books themselves are Stealth Numbered. That means the Volume number is found nowhere on the outside of the volume and is buried in the small print before the title page. I believe this is being done so customers don't panic that the books are being released out of order and we still don't have the first four volumes released. So far Fantagraphics has released (or announced) volumes #5 through #14. The volumes are also divided into either Donald Duck or Uncle Scrooge volumes co-mingling the numbers. In that way a Donald story from the same date as a Srooge story from the same time will always be in different volumes. This set includes Volume #9 The Pilaxated Parrot with all stories published in 1950 and Volume #10 Terror Of The Beagle Boys with all Donald stories from 1951. Volume #9 was first published in 2015 while volume #10 was first printed in 2016. Carl Barks was a genius and story wise this is an excellent collection that run the gamut from one pagers to full length sagas of like 'You Can't Guess' which ran 26 pages. A couple of the smaller stories are not written by Barks, and in one case only written by Barks with a different artist. This collection also includes some famous firsts like the first time we see Uncle Scrooge swimming in his money bin, the first appearance of Scrooge's nemeses the Beagle Boys and the beginnings of the Junior Woodchucks. In the story 'Dangerous Disguise' Barks gives us his take of a Hitchcock like Spy Thriller complete with a very human Feme Fatale. This story got Barks in a bit of trouble, and he was told go back to just Anthropomorphic characters. All around this is a great collection and a great value. Highly Recommended.

"Terror of the Beagle Boys" marks the first appearance of the title characters. It also includes such classics as "Donald Duck in Old California!", "Billions to Sneeze At" and "The Trouble with Dimes." "Dangerous Disguise" is an oddball story, but the rest is classic Barks. The other volume, "The Pixilated Parrot," has the magnificent title story, one of the funniest Barks ever wrote, "Vacation Time," "The Magic Hourglass" and the truly chilling "Ancient Persia." A magnificent two-volume set.
