How's the traction on these? I'm really looking for a criss-cross flip-flop that I can just slide into on a boat-no back strap or between-toe straps.

I buy this style due to their traction, I have owned no less than 10 pair of this style in various colors. Mine have maintained traction for over a year with almost daily wear. I do recommend that when the sole wears down to replace, this usally takes a year or two, even though the upper shows little or no wear. Hope this helps.

does it stay on heel of foot in the water or pool

The strap goes ACROSS the vamp (top of foot) NOT behind the heel. These are the MOST comfortable sandal that Crocs makes. Just ordered another pair too.
