I know this sounds weird, but i'm looking for a device that will allow voip phones to connect to analog lines. is this such a device?

An FXO Gateway will allow you to connect to standard copper phone lines, and connect them to a network - and thus voip phones. It will be basic single line operation, unless you utilize a voip type phone system. Hope this helps.

If i wanted to simply convert a few pot lines to sip endpoints without a voip service, would this allow me to do so?

Yes. no internet access or VOIP service is required. You can connect this to up to 4 analog POTS lines and have VOIP service on the other end. One caveat is , I was not able to get my VOIP phones to communicate with this grandstream box directly. I think it should work but it was not getting through the authentication. But I was able to get Asterisk to communicate with it , and my phones with Asterisk.

We have 3 analog landlines. We want to turn them to voip and use ip phones without any recurring payments. Is this the right product?

Yes this will do what you want. We use this with FreePBX to accomplish what you described. The configuration will take a little work to get right. There are some guides online.

Not worth buying

It works good, but the configurations is complex and not stable. I wish i could return this. Its just lying in my store right now.

works super with FreePBX

I was able to to configure the unit to work with my POTS line as well as 2 magic jack lines. The web interface is similar to other Grandstream adapters (e.g. HT503). I haven't had to reboot the unit due to hang ups or other malfunctions and the price is good compare to other similar products. All in all, I would highly recommend.

Works

The unit works fine with Freepbx setup but has some minor issues. Grandstream needs to include more detailed instructions with their equipment. The issue I have is with FSK VMI signal that's not being routed through the unit and there is no option to enable VMI in the Firmware. Many providers offer voice mail service and it would be nice to know when someone laves a message for you. As of now I have not found a solution to this problem. Other than that the unit is equipped with many other functions and so far it hasn't failed once since it was put into service. Also because of lack of proper setup instructions It took a bit of time to make it work. Be aware that there is no clean guide available anywhere. I 've spent hours searching the internet for it and eventually made it work but it was difficult.

El equipo funciona muy bien una vez que se ha logrado configurar, la configuración de la interface SIP no es compleja, pero la configuración de los puertos FXO no es sencilla, requiere la ejecucion de los autodiagnosticos de lineas telefónicas el cual no es intuitivo. La documentación se debe descargar del sitio del proveedor.
