No, you must use it with the Control Unit only.

Is one unit for one car?

No it does every car...it's basically a race management system for your phone or tablet that counts laps and times and more.

Can this take the place of driver display and lap counter?

Yes, and you can use it with SmartRace too (a third part app).

Will this work with a MacBook Pro lap top?

I don't believe it will. It connects via the Carrera Race app and the app only works on mobile or tablet devices. I use it on my iPad and it works great.
