Great value, great item
I was looking for a new crock pot that had a locking lid and came across this one. I read an assortment of reviews - starting with the 1 stars and going up. I'd like to comment on the most common complaints: Third biggest complaint in the 1 - 2 star reviews: It won't shut off on it's own or change temps. Well, no where in the description does it say it's programmable, so no one should expect this feature! I am easily distracted. I could have supper all ready in the crock and if a friend calls and asks if I want to meet after work for dinner or coffee, I'm apt to say yes. That's why I bought a very inexpensive timer usually used to turn lights on and off and use it to delay start my crock and to shut it off at an appropriate time. I feel this is a smart and safe thing to do as a general habit. Who knows if an emergency might delay your return to the house on any given day? Second biggest complaint in the 1 star reviews: The capacity isn't really 7 quarts - it's 6 when filled all the way to the top. I had the same question, so I called Hamilton Beach. I got a very poorly informed person, but after a lot of questions, I realized what she was trying to tell me was the capacity of the crock is based on DRY measures. My knowledge was rusty so I googled it. Dry measure is 8 quarts to the peck, 4 pecks to the bushel, etc., and a DRY quart is smaller by about 16% than a LIQUID quart. When you do the math, 7 DRY quarts = 6 Liquid quarts. So the bottom line is that they are being honest in one sense of the description, but who the heck measures the capacity of their crock pot as if it were full of lima beans or grain? We all think of QUARTS as in a quart of milk. It's accurate for DRY measure - but I really feel this is misleading because no one thinks of the contents of the crock pot in this manner. Biggest complaint of the 1 star reviews: Steam comes out when you open the lid. Well, I guess that's an obvious result of cooking something with the lid closed all day. I felt that using a minimal amount of care solved that problem. I've used it for shared suppers, and as long as I'm the first one to open it, I've never noticed a problem with other people opening it after I did initially since the worst of the steam escaped the first time. All that said, I LOVE this crock. Yes - it runs a little hotter than my old one (so does my new stove, but I'm not complaining.) Yes - you have to act in a responsible and careful manner when opening it. (Duh.) No - it doesn't hold 7 quarts of liquid, but it's bigger than any other crock I've seen so that isn't really a problem. The lid latches securely. Even soup broth does not leak out in my experience. After a couple uses, the lid sits better than it does (unlatched) at first. I think this is a great buy for the money.

Large Capacity, Consistent Heating and Great Features That WORK!
An exceptional slow cooker! I have owned several traditional "Crock Pots" and this beats them hands-down for price, performance and overall convenience! Prior to this, the best slow cooker I ever used was my parents' seemingly ancient one-piece (i.e. no removable insert) stoneware "Crock Pot" from the mid-1970s adorned in a rather odd "Avocado Green" finish. I made my very first "slow cooker" recipes with that old cooker and it is still as consistent and reliable today as it was before I was born. Barring any impact that might shatter the stoneware, that old Crock Pot will likely be around longer than me! Needless to say, I was so impressed with that original Crock Pot, that I sought out the "Crock Pot" brand exclusively when I moved out and wanted a slow cooker of my own. Unfortunately, it turned out my dad was right when he exclaimed "they just don't make them like they used to!" Inconsistent heating and reliability problems seem to plague the newer name-brand "Crock Pots" and the more recent ones I owned were no exception. Ultimately, after my sister abducted my largest "Crock Pot" following a family potluck, I decided she could keep it. It was time for an upgrade... That's where the Hamilton Beach "Stay or Go" cooker came into my life. I have experienced great luck with Hamilton Beach products. They don't feel like heavy and "expensive" appliances, but their range of well-featured and reasonably priced mixers, blenders and toasters have ultimately replaced most of the Cuisinart and Oster appliances that I was using before them. In fact, my very first Hamilton Beach product, a hand mixer and mixing stand that I bought as a "refurb" for next to nothing, has outpowered and outlasted all of its siblings by several years (I still use it!). Visiting the land of slow cookers, I noticed immediately that the reviews for the "Stay or Go" slow cookers were about as positive as a product could get, so I decided to give one a try...and I'm glad I did! This is a simple, but well thought out slow cooker. There's no digital panel to program cooking times, but that can be a plus to reliability over the long term. The latching lid is a wonderful feature that improves the efficiency of the system and the silicone seal is far more substantial than on the similar "Crock Pot" brand cookers with locking lids. I also really love that the lid is latched in one place, not two, and that the "arm" extends across the entire width of the glass. The lid latch opens easily and conveniently lays back for easy access to the contents without needing to be removed. However, it is easily removed if desired, such as when cleaning or serving on a table. The front dial control is as straightforward as it gets...""High", "Low" and "Warm". Best of all, the settings do as they say...take that, "Crock Pot"! Heating is very consistent and the warming function keeps food warm without overcooking it. Perhaps the best feature, aside from the very nice 6-quart black stoneware insert and securely locking lid, is the addition of folding handles. Being a large bodied cooker in general, it is very nice to have handles that conveniently fold out of the way to help free up valuable cupboard space and maximize room on the table when the cooker is used as a serving dish. All in all, this is a GREAT slow cooker and an exceptional value compared to the competition. If you want a premium quality slow cooker without a premium price tag, it's definitely hard to beat. Highly Recommended!

Basic, No spills even on hills and twisties!!
Bought this Slow Cooker after much research and debate. I needed a travel cooker for my families gatherings and this one is marketed as a "Stay or Go" which it does both perfectly. I was not concerned about bells and whistles and wanted a basic, durable and travel ready 10-15 year cooker. The unit arrived in timely fashion and after a good washing of the stoneware was put to work within two hours of opening the box. My first item up to make was chili for a cookout and this required transporting it. I was nervous because I have and had similar cookers from other manufactures but they all fail at keeping liquid sealed in the stoneware. This cooker did not fail with my Chili which I make a little thin so that cracker lovers have some soup, it kept its composure quite well and didn't spill a drop (keep in mind I was driving up 45 degree hills and speeding to make it on time). The hinged lid makes serving and keeping food covered easy. The latching mechanism and controls both while very basic have the feel that this will be around a long time. The rubber seal on the lid is not the typical round bead but more of a rubber flap that seals tight and securely. This unit also has very sturdy handles on the sides and these collapse to take up less room in your kitchen cabinet. Cooking times seems to be on par with my older units and I have not noticed any "over heating" the food on the lowest setting and in fact the chili after the cookout was done (on low the whole time - outside!) was still 193 degrees which is on par with my older cookers. Very happy with this purchase and wish I could find the same one in white, as the stainless is very attractive almost too much that you want to pamper it. So there you have it, I purchase items after I exhaust online reviews and for my money this is the perfect "BASIC" Stay or Go cooker that delivers great cooking, easy cleaning, and NO SPILLS!! Thanks for reading.

Pretty Good
Replaced an older GE bare-bones crock pot I let my daughter take with her to college. This unit does some things very well, but had a few areas I would suggest improvement on. The low setting worked great to roast my pulled pork and did not bubble, boil or get too hot over the seven-eight hour cool. The high setting definitely made a noticeable difference by bringing it to a slow simmer and the keep warm worked well too. I mention this first because that's what these cheap appliances need to do first and foremost and there are many other products on Amazon that reviewers claimed would get too hot. Second positive: the lid clamps down easily and seals well. I tipped it with water in it to test and it only leaks out the steam vent holes if you really invert it; which is unlikely during normal transport to a tailgate or party. The flip up handles function well and protect you from The extreme heat of the outside metal. The big area for improvement would be the lid. I can't just tip it up on my counters because of the cupboards above it, so it would have to be set out in the open. Also, the little tab for lifting it open puts your hand right in the path of escaping steam when you open it. Yes, Hamilton Beach forewarned of this in the manual, but who reads an operating manual on the crocks at a potluck or party? You are going to have a bunch of swearing guests with steam burns if you don't set a silicone pot holder glove with it and a little homemade sign, people are gonna do it. I got bit twice forgetting bout that detail and I had read the manual. Just easy to overlook is all I'm saying. It really would be simple to incorporate a D- loop handle into the center top of the lid plastic piece. This would better position the users hand and fingers away from the escaping steam. May still burn forearms, but seems when I tested opening from that position, I got less of a steam blast. In case you were wondering, the manual also says you can cook with the lid clamped closed; which I did with no issues. I like that this is simple control with no added cost for automatic electronics to malfunction and shut it down mid cook. Lid removes and replaces very easily aside from needing the glove. I also pre-cooked a crock full of water for about four hours to get rid of the nasty new smells n chemicals. This worked perfect so I had no odd smells or flavors from the seal, crock or heater when I made the pulled pork. Overall, I'm satisfied asong as it's durable. I'll report back after a year of use or so.

Just what I was looking for
I had been using a round 4-quart Crockpot for almost 20 years. I finally decided to upgrade to a larger, oval unit and after reading many, many reviews of several popular slowcookers, I decided to go with this one. I used it yesterday for the first time and I LOVE this thing! I made homemade beef stew from scratch and it turned out perfectly. What I really like about this slowcooker compared to the other "portable" slowcookers are: 1. The pot comes completely out for super easy cleaning. No more holding a heavy crockpot over the side of the sink and trying to keep the cord from getting wet. I can submerge this whole pot, let it soak, and with a couple of swipes with a soapy sponge it's clean. Plus, it can go in the dishwasher. 2. The lid. It's perfect in that there's just one flip lock to close... no rubber bands to lose and just one spot to make sure it's closed correctly. 3. The side handles fold down for better storage. 4. When the lid is angled almost all the way up, it just slides right out for easy serving or cleaning . Plus, the plastic that's attached to the tempered glass is open on both ends, so it doesn't trap water when it's washed. 5. The seal seems really good, even though I haven't put it to the "car-brake" test yet. There wasn't any steam coming out while on yesterday for 7 hours, though. 6. Easy to use. Even though programmable units might be nice in theory, all I wanted was "high, low, and warm" settings. 7. The price: $25... with all the nice features, this can't be beat. The ONLY con I've found is the fact that one should be careful in lifting the lid to avoid a steam burn. After I got steamed the first time, I just unlocked it and used my wooden spoon to lift the lid. Easy enough solution for me!

An excellent machine at a very low price
We have now used this for two meals. Very pleased with the product. We had been using an old Rival crock pot which did the job. But it was 4 quart and we wanted a 6 quart machine. We found several on Amazon that were a lot more expensive. It seems that if you want a programmable one then it can kick the price up two to three times this one. Having used a crock pot for almost 40 years now we couldn't imagine what we would want to "program." That's the beauty of a crock pot---you dump the stuff in and turn it on. In addition, when there are more features there are more ways something could stop working. So, for $22 we got everything we wanted: It has a to-go feature (top attaches securely), the pot itself is removable for washing, there are three settings (high, low, warm), and it looks nice. The top also flips up so no longer do we need to find somewhere to place it when we are adding ingredients---so the top can be attached in one or two places or removed completely for cleaning. We are delighted with the purchase. The price-point is excellent. One can cook great meals using real food quite easily and with no waste. Since we received it a week ago we have cooked turkey soup and pork/poblano-pepper burritos. Yum!

best crock pot ever!!!
I was needing a new crockpot, but was leary because I hadn't seen one that solved the issues with my previous one: the knob on the lid was plastic and broke off not long after I got it, plus if you were using it to serve in a food line you had to have somewhere to put the lid (which would usually end up being on the table next to the pot, then it would get stuck to the table because of the steam on the lid and make a watery mess too, or people would just have to set the lid back on top with the serving spoon sticking out and the lid would most often fall into the food), it cooked everything too hot and food was always crusted around the edges, would have to have a kid hold the lid down as we drove down the road to a party with the crock pot full of food so it wouldn't splash or spill all over my car...THEN I FOUND THIS ONE!!! The lid is on a hinge and just lifts up and stays up if you want it to instead of having to remove the lid and set it on the counter while you serve your food, the lid has a gasket and clamp so it seals shut and doesn't spill while traveling, and it cooks evenly, and is a full quart bigger than my old one. YAY! All at a comparable price to the other crock pots on the market, but much better! LOVE IT!!!! Why haven't I seen this crock pot at a store? Glad I saw it on a review of a gals blog...AWESOME!

Very Pleased with this Slow Cooker
I purchased this particular slow cooker after doing some research on 6-qt. units. I have two 3 1/2-qt. slow cookers and I wanted a larger one so I could make larger quantities. This particular unit was very much in my price range and I decided to go for it. So far I have been very happy with it. This slow cooker has three temperature settings - Warm, Low and High. Low and High should be obvious for anyone who uses slow cookers. Heating so far has been even and consistent. The Warm setting is not for cooking but to maintain temperature after cooking is complete. My smaller crock pots do not have this feature so this feels like a luxury to me now. The lid also locks in place so that the slow cooker can be transported with food in it with a reduced risk of spilling the contents. There's a latch for clamping the lid down and it is neither too tight nor too loose - it feels about right. If the slow cooker is properly secured (such as in a box) so that it does not tip, spilling should be minimized. One concern I had when researching was that I saw many complaints regarding pressure build-up and ultimately shattered lids while transporting locking-lid slow cookers. I did not see any reports of that with this particular slow cooker and now that I have it, it's obvious why this is the case. Hamilton Beach apparently pays attention to the reports as well and they have made an adjustment to this slow cooker to eliminate the issue - there are two steam holes in the lid that prevent the pressure from building up. According to the documentation that comes with the slow cooker, the heating temperatures have been adjusted to compensate for these holes, and in using this slow cooker I would agree that the holes in the lid seem to have no effect on the cooking times and temperatures. The lid and liner are dishwasher safe. This is a nice bonus for those who prefer not to wash by hand. I likely will not rely on the dishwasher for cleaning my slow cooker but it's nice to know that I have the option. Overall, I am very satisfied with this slow cooker and based on my experience I am happy to recommend it. It is priced right and it works well.

This is a great slow cooker
The lid is easy to lock, lift, or remove with one hand and it forms a tight seal to avoid spillage. I specifically chose this one over other digital models and I'm very happy with its no-nonsense reliability and ease of use. The fold down side handles are also a nice feature. The temperature settings seem fine - I use the slow setting if I'm going to be away all day and the fast setting if I want the food to be ready within 4 or 5 hours.

Simple to use and works well
Really easy and simple to use. The fact that it just has a dial control means it's far less sensitive than a touch screen so it fits well into our rather rugged lifestyle! I love the fact that you can lock down the lid and just take the cooker with you without having to fiddle around boxing up hot food. Hoping that this slow cooker will last us a long time.

Excelente calidad, baja funcionalidad
