It contains no nutrients that plants need, so you will need to add fertilizer. Unlike peat moss, it is pH-balanced. I broke up the compacted coconut coir and planted some herbs from seed. It works well for germination, but once the seeds have sprouted, you need to add fertilizer or mix the coir with regular soil so the plants can grow properly.
