This stuff is awesome!!! My husband did have to saw in quarters for me… I ordered one big block then ordered the bricks. I’m using for dust bath for chickens. It is safe for my hens. I put a brick into a 5 gallon bucket. Fill with water and let soak a little while as it brick breaks down by absorbing water. I dump into their dust bath and you’d think it was Christmas morning the way they tear into it. Wondering if it’s more fun for me or them. The bricks are so much easier to work with rather than adding bags of soil.

I like how it came in a compact package and NOTE TO BUYERS....this means that you'll need to soak the block of peat before you can use it as topsoil. This worked fine for me bc I had spots to fill in. If you have a large area, I recommend soaking it in very container overnight and then it will expand and be easier to handle I will buy this product again. Thanks!

Coconut coir is a good growing medium for plants, but it is not a replacement for soil. It contains no nutrients that plants need, so you will need to add fertilizer. Unlike peat moss, it is pH-balanced. I broke up the compacted coconut coir and planted some herbs from seed. It works well for germination, but once the seeds have sprouted, you need to add fertilizer or mix the coir with regular soil so the plants can grow properly. It is better used as a soil amendment rather than a replacement for soil, unless you are growing plants hydroponically, where nutrients are supplied through the fertilizer mixed into the water.

Color came out a consistent warm brown with no debris or clumping anywhere in the batch. The listing says it expands to nearly twenty gallons and that math held up once fully hydrated. Some sections expanded quickly while other areas stayed compressed and needed additional soaking and breaking apart by hand. It also became very wet and muddy during the process, which made it messier to work with than I anticipated. I can see the appeal for storage and larger gardening projects, but be prepared to spend some time hydrating and fluffing it before use. It worked eventually, but it was not as quick or effortless as I had hoped.
