Q: Our window slides from the side. Can this fan be place vertically instead and then close the window against the long side of it to secure it??

I have mine installed vertically. I did not use the bottom extender, but the top extender filled the gap perfectly. It's about 30 inches high with the one extender out. I actually leave the extender in sometimes and have both fans on 'intake', figuring the 6 inches above will allow air to exhaust. It's still very secure, even with the extender not extended. No one can possibly reach through (they would have to remove the screen first), and you cannot remove it without destroying the fan and making a lot of noise (I cut a round dowel to keep the window closed tight against the fan).

Q: Is this usable with a window screen on the outside? (Does the motor fan protrude inwards (towards interior of home) or outwards (exterior of home)?

yes works with screen in place.

Q: Just received and only one fan is spinning, is it defective? I tried switching from exhaust to intake, left blade doesnt spin at all

Yes, it's defective. They are both supposed to spin. I got one that only ran when it wanted to. They're not great quality.

Q: If the power goes out, will this fan come back on on its own when the power is restored, or so you have to turn it back on yourself?

Nope. Other than the price, I find little good to say about this fan.
