Yes, it's that Shania, long before she turned the country-music industry upside down. As the '80s rolled into the '90s, and she was toiling in a Canadian resort, it appears as if the making of this CD was an attempt to transform her into the new Pat Benatar, a kind of rock goddess specializing in the power ballad. That she had the voice for it is beyond doubt--her expressive singing is by far the best thing about this album. The songs (mostly cowritten by Shania and Paul Sabu) leave much to be desired, as do the generally predictable arrangements. However, as a little peek into her past, it's definitely of interest, and the fact that some of the proceeds go to charity means that it's not a complete cash in. --Chris Nickson

Don't buy this!
I am all about knowing and appreciating history. To know where an artist has come from and see the journey adds a level understanding and appreciation of their newer material. I had read the beginning material was quite different but had an expectation that it would still be enjoyable music from a great talent before fame. NOT AT ALL! I bought it at a bargain price and it will go into a bargain bin somewhere, unfortunately the worst music I've bought in years. Sorry Shania, you should have not let this be released, no wonder it took a while before you got a record deal - these are awful demos.

Proves the multi-talentedness of Shania Twain
Very cool album, first of all. The songs on it remind me of many of my favorite artists from the 80's; for example, both mixes of 'For The Love Of Him' are very much like something Expose would sing, 'Wild And Wicked' sounds like the rock group Vixen. The rest of the songs are like Heart's music, yet all of them have the distinct "shania" feel that we have all come to know and love on the album SHANIA TWAIN, COME ON OVER, and THE WOMAN IN ME. On COME ON OVER, we all got to see a little bit of her talent besides country as she made many hit crossover songs that were as big pop hits as they were country; the whole sound of that album is a mix between pop and country. But on BEGINNINGS, we get to see the true talent in pop music of Shania Twain. She not only does pop without hints of country on this album, but she goes full-on-rock in this album too. Nobody can tell just by listening to her country albums alone, but she has a great voice for Heart/Vixen-type rock and believe me you'll hear quite a lot of that on this album. All of Shania's albums that she has ever made are totally awesome, but this is the album that truly proves the many multi talents of Shania. And it still has the sassiness and attitude that we all enjoy on every one of her other albums. Enjoy!

An interesting contrast to her current work
The main reason Shania Twain is such a success is because she has arguably the best producer on the planet, Mutt Lange, manning the boards. On this album, however, Shania proves that maybe--just maybe--she's not a complete Trilby to Lange's Svengali. "Beginnings" sounds very much like Heart (who, interestingly enough, Lange was working with at the time this album was made), and Shania actually shows some range in her voice without the put-upon country accent or the Patsy Cline imitation she strives for these days. The songs are pretty typical late eighties power pop, very catchy. This CD doesn't sound bad pounding out of a car stereo, either. Casual listeners who enjoy the pop radio remixes of Shania's current stuff should enjoy this, but diehard country fans will complain that it's too rock.

Definetely NOT what you'd expect, but still cool!
I was so excited when i saw this in a music shop, i LOVE Shania, so (without knowing it was her first album) i bought it. Luckily i LOVED it, but the problem is that in Britain it is a completely different cover called 'Wild and Wicked' and does not state AT ALL, (unless you look at the miniscule writing at the back) that it is old. I have to say i was confused when the music came on, i actually thought that they put the wrong cd in there! So basically, if you don't like rocky-indie type stuff, you will end up being one of (the many) reviewers who complain about 'wasting their hard earned cash and time' (blah-dee blah-dee blah). Luckily i loved most of the songs ('Bite my lip' and 'for the love of him' are SOOOOOO cool),though it is much less polished and in places quite mediocre compared to the (amazing) 'Come on over'. You really have to listen to the samples before getting it, if you don't, please don't make even MORE complaining reviews when you decide you don't like it after all.

This is a great CD of Shania's earlier masterpieces
Shania Twain's 'new' album of 'old' material. It is brilliant!It is lovely to here Shania's first recordings in one. It is quite a contrast to her country recordings is this is mainly a Rock type of album. More like country rock."Two Hearts, One Love" is a beautiful song. My favourite is "(Don't Gimme That) Once Over". It is a moderatly paced melody that has a great beat and a feel to it. I found myself humming it for ages after I listened to it. More excellent melodies are "Half Breed", "Wild and Wicked", "I Lost My Heart When I Found You", and "Rhythm Made Me Do It".This is a must. It is a great album.

Not What I'd Expected
This is not the Shania who's music I know and love. I'm very hard pressed to recognize her voice in any of the tracks, and this is more like rock & roll from the mid-80's than it is anything else. Reminescent of....Heart. Some may recall that "Half Breed" was a hit for Sonny and Cher many years ago. It sounds fine on the CD, but, still, it's not the Shania I know. Shania's first three CDs are still her best work. However, no collection of Shania's music would be complete without this CD. So, if your as big a fan as I am of Shania's, by all means buy this one. If not, be advised, there is no trace of country, or adult contemporary on this CD. It's all rock. I was a little disappointed, but I'll keep it.

It was neat to see how unsure Shania was about the direction she would take. Some rock in songs but still that country feeling. I enjoy everything she puts out.
