I believe they do refer to the same thing. Different manufacturer's have different assemblies for shower only and shower/tub faucets, but generally the mechanics ought to be similar. If you're pulling one of the cartridges that this tool is used for be patient and don't be afraid to use a little force. I've had these stick even though the retainer was in my hand and it should have slid out. Good luck.

Q: I can use a locking wrench on this right, it won't bend/break?

Hi: First of all the tool from is like a tube with a slot full length. I would be very cautious using any force that would collapse the tube from the side. The valve assembly really should not be that tight! I do not think there should be any corossion between the plastic and brass of the faucet base. When I used the wrench I only tightened by hand. Instead of a locking wrench I would consider a hole drilled through end at a right angle to the split and use a 1/4 in bolt or rod.
