The bottom of the container says it is 6.9 liters, which is about 1.8 gallons.

does the lid seal in any way or would it fall off if the basket was knocked over?

The lid fits nicely, with a ridge on the underside to keep it in place. It doesn’t slide off. But sadly, when my kitten knocks it over, the lid does come off.

Cutest Trash Can

Went to both Target and Walmart trying to find a woven trash can and none of them had lids. The color of the trash bin is a perfect wood honey brown and its not too big. Its a bit expensive for a trashcan but they packaged it with care and you can tell its great quality so its definitely worth it to me.
