Q: is this topped with an image of natural sandstone or is the top actually the natural variation in the stone?

The top of the coaster is actual sandstone. Each coaster in the set is totally different with natural variations in the stone.

Q: Do cups stick to them when you lift your glass/mug/cup/drinking vessel?

I have used these coasters for about thirty years. Whenever the glass sticks to the coaster and threatens to lift up with it, I merely place it back down to the table and tilt the glass as I lift it, essentially separating it so as to not have it come up and then fall. It’s just something I’m used to doing.

Q: Is the surface of these coasters smooth like the sandstone coasters with images on them, or rough since the whole thing is natural sandstone?

They're fairly smooth. Like actual stone that has been sanded down. They are not glossy smooth, more rough smooth, if that makes sense. For the record, they look great (especially on darker furniture), and water rings completely disappear from them in an hour or so.
