Yes but it has to used like a Roman battle shield/battering ram on your way to the bathroom and then you have to swing it wildly much like a professional wrestler would use a metal folding chair in a cage match. Perhaps consider purchasing a pair of them and use the spare to wedge the door shut from the inside.

One edge of my bathtub is less than an inch surface for the tray to rest on - would this tray still fit?

I also have less than an inch and I just have to be a little careful that I don’t bump it but it works just fine!

LOL! Well, It would definitely hold a 5 lb. bag of sugar (I tested it it) which is pretty concentrated so if the cats weight were spread out over the length of the caddy, I would think it would hold up fine. This thing is pretty sturdy/solid. Hope this helps.
