Pfister S74-2920 Avanti Cartridge

Fit my old bathtub fixture perfect. Now its nice and easy to pull out and push in

Our shower valve broke and we did a lot of searching on the internet to find the matching part - that was the hardest part of the project since the shower had a lever style handle without any manufacturer markings. Finally found out that we had Pfister Avanti push/pull type cartridge and also found a very helpful youtube video on how to replace it and decided to try it ourselves (had a plumber's number handy though just in case). I ordered the part on Saturday night and it arrived on Sunday morning. The quality of the part is good, it is plastic with metal stem. Googled youtube video title "How to replace a 30 year old Price Pfister AVANTI shower cartridge" and followed the instructions. The replacement was a success and works great!

Perfect fit and easy to install once you are able to remove the old one. In my case I was replacing an original valve from 1987 so understandably it was a nightmare to remove no matter how much pressure I exerted. After trying various solutions over 2 days, spraying the old valve with WD-40 and letting it soak for 2 hours finally worked. The new valve is perfect and makes turning on the water and adjusting the pressure or temperature simple and easily done with one finger. Just make sure you apply a generous amount of silicone grease on the new valve to make it easily removable in the future if needed.

Very good as it works better than expected and is the right product for my needs or in other words it fixed the shower valve problem.

Do yourself a big favor. Just spend the $25 and get this OEM stem from Pfister. It's well made, with a metal collar, really easy and smooth to operate, and it's lifetime warrantied by Pfister. I made the mistake of buying a cheap knockoff one from Home Depot made by Dayco, and it was awful. The collar is plastic, and on a shower handle, it was really difficult to pull out and push in for me, let alone for a elder with limited strength. For awhile, I thought that it was just because the stem was new, and gradually it would loosen up. But it never did, and when I took the Dayco knockoff one out, the seals were all blown and the stem kept binding if I tried to move it up and down. The moment I instead this OEM one, the handle was smooth and easy to operate. I wasted like $15 on the Dayco stem from Home Depot and should have just ordered this one from here. And now, I get to replace 2 more :(

A good replacement for the Pfister cartridge. Comes well lubricated for easy install. Instructions probably needs a little update but enough to install properly. Overall, a good purchase.

Perfect replacment for 1980s style avanti cartage which is push and pull for shower.Turn type. Easy install. Good price and fast deliever.

I always watch a lot of YT videos to learn how to replace this cartridge. I wish i took some pictures to document the install. Also, make sure to read a lot of the comments to get some good pointers. Very helpful. After i changed the tub spout with diverter, i wanted to change the shower cartridge. It wasn't smooth pulling the handle out. Doesn't look it has ever been changed. Make sure to use silicon grease. After i pulled out the old cartridge, i cleaned and greased the chamber where the cartridge goes in. When i tried to push the new cartridge in, it wouldn't go all the way in where i could screw in the locking nut. As i pulled it back out, i saw the O ring that was left in from the old cartridge. Its a good thing that i wasn't able to screw the lock nut. Otherwise i would have a major leak that i would not know about. I remember watching a video that the guy said to make sure there is nothing left in the chamber. Get a flashlight and shine inside. That tip i forgot to do. After i got the old O ring out, i greased the chamber again and slide the new cartridge in with no problem. I didn't install the cover plate yet. i screwed the handle back on to the cartridge and did a test run with the water on. Turning left to right, push and pull out several times. Looking to see if there was any sign of leaks. NONE! Then i removed the handle, put on the cover plate, and then screwed the handle back on. Now it operates smooth like buttah! Buying another to replace the master bathroom cartridge.
