Extech407732 Type 2 Digital Sound Level Meter 35 to 130 dB

Bought to test audibility on Fire alarms and services plant.
OK its chinese, it will never be a Rhode and Schwarz but for a quick test to see that the dBa of the alarms is in the right ball park, it does it quite well. Nicely built. Could do with a protective case with it and for the money, even a slip cover would be good. Fortunately I had the box my previous meter came in that was replaced with this one after it died. Overall a reasonable tool

Failed badly on frequency response tests, insensitive
I tested this thoroughly in our microphone calibration room alongside our reference mic. Calibration at 1kHz 90dB SPL was spot on - it read 90.0! However, this is only part of the story. Tests at ten frequencies revealed that the A-weighting is nowhere near correct. Errors were: 50Hz +16dB, 100Hz +0.3dB, 200Hz +1.6, 2kHz +0.3 10kHz +13.5dB!! 12.5kHz +7.3dB.The gross errors at 50Hz and 10kHz are totally unacceptable and massively outside the standard specification. The peak at 10kHz will make it read very high on noise sources with high frequency content. Note also that the minimum reading is 40dBA which makes it useless for measuring noise on fridges, air conditioning etc which normally fall in the range 20 - 35dBA. A shame as the analog bar is a nice feature.

Speakers sound better after using this
Has made my movie listening far better after using this to dial in my 5.1.4 Atmos setup

A Great SPL meter
The Extech 407730 is an excellent Digital Sound Level Meter for the price.I installed a new set of column speakers (JBL CBT100LA) in a new church and used theSPL meter to check sound levels in the room before and after the installation. The meter was very sensitive and quite responsive. The combined digitaland analogue meter readout is a great feature. Few low priced SPL metershave this feature. No problems with the meter so far. Thanks!EW Edmonton, AB Canada

Bien pour utilisation à main levée. Sortie analogique inutilisable.
