The picture of the squirrel is at the end of my garden, around 120 feet away, maybe more. It's a big garden. And could see the squirrel clear and up in the trees etc really nice and clear. If they want something basic to see things a little larger and with a smaller and possibly easier to hold set of binoculars, then possibly check out some simple alternatives. If however they are more in the teens all the way to young adults et al, then this is a great set of binoculars as it has individual eye relief / shields on both ocular lenses (where you look through) so as to help different people with different focal points (somewhat akin to some people needing different types of glasses). It also has a good individual focus wheel on the right eyepiece which helps a lot with adjusting the focus on an object to suit differing people after you have used the central main central focus wheel - sort of plug and play with the main focus and trim with the right side objective lens focus wheel. It is important to adjust the position of the two halves of the binoculars in order to get the best image (i prefer it to look almost like one single image as opposed to having it set wider to get two circular images (its about letting the brain do the focus/combining of the image I believe)... Anyway, with all these different adjustments any competent adult could set it up and let a child look through and adjust as required....again depending on age. I was expecting a cheap toy that would provide a few minutes of fun from the roof terrace, but I was pleasantly surprised by the image quality and just how solidly constructed these binoculars are. I'm sure we'll be spending many hours on the roof enjoying these. Why four stars? Well, the phone adapter gizmo tries hard to accommodate every phone, but the eyecup hanger isn't particularly well designed and is destined to go back in the box after it's fallen off a few times. The tripod is okay, though kinda pointless unless you're viewing from behind a high wall. If you've a metal one hanging around you'll soon swap it out.
