BenQ DLP HD 1080p Projector (W1070) - 3D Home Theater Projector with Lens Shift Technology and RGBRGB Color Wheel

First off - I purchased this projector as a NEW projector - not used. The BenQ DLP HD 1080p Projector (W1070) is a very good projector when you don't have a lot of money to spend, but want a Theatre vibe in the home. I do. I do. I do. I am a huge fan of the movies, but don't like to spend so much money to see them on a big screen. Not to mention the rudeness of others. And people are getting ruder everyday. So this projector works. Fairly bright (2500 hrs or less on Bulb), color is descent, no auto focus, but I don't mind that. The fan can get a little loud if the projector is being used for a longer time and the room is not too cool (I'm in Central Florida) so I do get the louder fan noise if I don't have the AC running. Not a deal breaker. I use the projector for about a 120" screen - just projected onto the wall (Beige Color) and it is very watchable. The wife loves it and doesn't complain. This is how we watch our movies together. Very happy. You won't be disappointed by this projector. It will do very well as a first or second projector. I do have to say BUYER BEWARE when you purchase things on Amazon and it is said to be NEW. They are mostly going to be NEW, but occasionally you will get something that you can tell has been opened and used for a little bit. That happened to me with this Projector Order. The projector arrived, I assumed it was new until within the first year, the bulb blew (Popped Loudly) so I ordered a replacement. I assumed it was just a faulty bulb, but when the new bulb arrived and I had to open the projector - 1 screw was missing and you could see scratches from where someone used a screwdriver or a knife to lift the cover for the bulb. Also, after replacing the bulb - The picture was very very nice. My wife said it looked brighter than she had remembered it when we first used the projector. It was brighter. I feel as though someone had wanted to get a new bulb, ordered the projector, swapped the bulbs and sent the projector back to Amazon where it was then forwarded to fill my order. This is why we can get orders from Amazon very quickly. That can also be the downside, people will order and swap things out, and then return the product for someone else to get stuck with. It even happens at LOWE'S, HOME DEPOT, BEST BUY etc. People will use any method they can to save themselves a few bucks at our expense. So watch out people, Amazon is a good place to shop most of the time, but you will need to be ready to return items if they look as though they are not NEW. Also watch when you order that you are buying a product that is NEW and not a Like New. Sometimes the low price blinds us.

We bought this after looking in the under $1200 price range for a home theater projector. We didn't want to purchase at $3000 because of all the 4K (ultra HD or UHD) talk and that coming out soon. It was really between this and the Acer H6510BD. We had a tough time deciding, but went with the BenQ after reading all the reviews on both. Some reviewers talked about fan noise. We can't hear it unless the room is silent, so it's a non issue for us. When there is movies or tv on, we can't hear it, and I have very good hearing! Some also talked about light leak. We have a small amount going about 2 feet out from the lens onto the ceiling, but it is not disturbing whatsoever. Maybe if you have a white ceiling? We have a completely brown theater, ceiling and all, so it doesn't matter much, and it is not in your field of view anyway, it's overhead. I have heard of others making an index card that will block this if need be. Many projectors have that problem. It has a zoom knob and a focus knob. Easy adjustments, but it's not automatic focus. You can use the test pattern for adjusting focus, or a blue ray movie. Pretty easy and good accuracy. TV feed is not very pretty because of compression from the provider, and enlarged that big, some channels look ok and some not, so not recommended for focus. (This is not the projector) The test pattern edges provided in the menu functions aren't exactly what you get on tv or movie edges, (the test pattern spills over if done right) , so I went back and forth with TV and blu ray movies until I got the proper size on my screen with the zoom, (about a half inch of image onto the velvet border of the Silver Ticket screen, then double checked focus on the test pattern and text showing on blu rays. I just ordered some blu ray calibration discs that I have not had before, and plan on further tweaking things. They have them on amazon, and I will update on how that goes. The picture quality was amazing right on our brown textured wall at 141 inches in a 13x17 theater room. Although impressive, we knew it was too big. We shrunk it to 135" and then to 120". After watching tv at 120" vs 135", we knew 120" was it. We ordered the Silver Ticket 120" screen here on amazon. I also reviewed that screen, but it is awesome, and the combination with this projector is amazing. The picture quality is fantastic. Good color, blacks and whites. SET GAMMA TO 2.8 FOR GREAT BLACK! We have seen expensive projectors and the quality of this is comparable in our opinion, and the money saved over a $3000 projector with all the 4k talk (ultra HD or UHD) coming out soon makes it worth it to us to not blow the bank something that is coming out in the near future as more affordable than it is today. Prices are coming down and content is being made. Theaters are starting to carry 4k movies. We saw Lone Survivor in 4K last week. Overall, this is an amazing image for the cost, and we love it combined with the Silver Ticket 120" screen. I woud recommend this to friends, and once they all see it, I'll try to post their reactions. One couple saw it, and they have the Acer projector mentioned above, all they need is the screen, and they immediately ordered the Silver Ticket after seeing our combo with this projector. We watched FLIGHT (snowboarding blu ray) and we all were stunned. Looks amazing. We also played Open Season blu ray disney movie and the detail of the animals fur was shocking. A 15 year old saw Man of Steel blu ray on it, and said it looks better than the movie theater. Love this projector. Again, set GAMMA to 2.8. and use a real screen in a black room. It looks incredible.

Even better than I was expecting! Not only did I receive it in the mail a day earlier than anticipated, I was also given a small refund from Amazon after I noticed the price drop a couple of days after I bought it. Amazon's customer service was awesome and prompt. Now about the projector itself. Visually I think that it is both stunning to look at and the picture quality is excellent for this price range. I haven't seen expensive projectors in use in person before (other than at the movies) but I would dare to say that it could compete well with significantly higher priced projectors. It is fairly easy to set up and turns on after only a few seconds. I noticed that some people don't like the remote that comes with it very well, which is understandable. However, I did appreciate the light function on the remote, which lit up the buttons so that you can see them in the dark or low light situations. Plus, all of the buttons I would think that need to be present were there. This BenQ projector was easily bright enough to deliver decent picture quality during the day in a room with 5 windows when I tested it. One time I connected my laptop to the projector and projected it onto a wooden tv stand just to see how well it works. Turns out that the "screen" looked better via the projector on wood than it did from my actual laptop! Praise Jesus, hallelujah! I found that to be pretty impressive. Sound/fan noise isn't much of an issue because I didn't even notice it at all while watching a movie. I really like the ability to zoom in and out to make the screen quite bigger if needed. Getting it to focus isn't too difficult either. I would definitely recommend a Bluray player and Bluray discs over DVD. There was a drastic difference between watching Kung-Fu Panda 2 on DVD and The Lego Movie on Bluray. The picture was significantly more detailed and clear as well as the overall coloring seemed better on the Bluray. The only complaint I have thus far is the odd plastic-like smell when it's in use, although it may just not be broken in completely yet. I'm no tech wizard and I'm definitely not seasoned on projectors, regardless, for the excellent overall quality I would highly recommend this BenQ projector to anyone looking to buy either their 1st projector or someone simply wanting a great value for the money. Before you buy it though, I recommend doing some research on similar projectors to make sure this one is the right fit for your needs. Good luck and hope you find the right one!

Let me preface my review by saying my current TV is a 63" Samsung Plasma (PN63C8000) and the BenQ W1070 is my first projector. I also haven't seen any other projectors besides this one so I can't compare it to competing products. I purchased this based on several positive reviews I'd read online. I've had the projector for about two weeks now and I have to admit the image sizes you can achieve with this thing are truly breathtaking. I often find myself staring slack-jawed at the enormity of the image. It's closest thing I've ever experienced to being in an actual movie theater. Image quality is very good overall. Obviously when compared to my plasma the contrast ratio is not very good but it's serviceable. Bright scenes in particular seem to lose a lot of shadow detail. I haven't researched it but I would assume it's because the projector is throwing out a lot more light onto the screen so shadow detail gets blown out. My projector is 13' from the screen so I would imagine it being worse if it were closer. Regularly exposed scenes and semi-dark scenes look excellent though, especially when fed a high quality HD source like a Blu Ray disc. Although in darker scenes you tend to get the dreaded "rainbow effect." I see it almost constantly in contrasty scenes where my girlfriend said she can't see it all. Apparently it's a limitation of the DLP technology. It can be very distracting although it's fine most of the time. Menus are straightforward and easy to understand. It offers a lot of options to tweak with the brightness and image quality. Source searching is ridiculously slow but once you start watching a movie or whatever it's not a big deal. I haven't tested the 3D feature because I don't want to spend an additional $75 for a single pair of glasses. Speaking of additional costs expect to spend a LOT more if you want the full "home theater" experience. First you'll need a really dark room if you don't want your blacks getting washed out. I had to buy a bunch of blackout curtains to cover each window which makes it nearly pitch black. Definitely not great for day time viewing with lots of ambient light. I also bought a ceiling mount and a fixed frame screen. I originally bought an Elite Screens 120" fixed frame screen but returned it for the 150" ER150WH1 since my wall was large enough to accomodate it. I'm very happy with my purchase overall. The experience can't be beat for the price. I picked it up when it was $850 so I feel like it's a good value, especially when compared to what size TV I could have got for that same price. Based on my experience I will definitely be sticking with home theater projectors in the future. I'm already looking into more expensive models with higher contrast ratios once this one finally dies. Pros: - ability to generate enormous screen sizes (up to 235") - bright image - very good image quality - great price for what you get - 3D (haven't tested though) Cons: - "rainbow effect" - slow source switching

I was looking for a projector to upgrade my home theater and wanted something mainly for 3d movies (I LOVE a good 3d movie) and something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. After reading just about every website and every review known to man, I narrowed my choice down to the Optoma HD131XE and this BenQ W1070. The choice between the two seemed, at first, difficult. As I continued reading, it seems the only advantage for the Optoma are the deeper black levels. However, after digging deeper, the reason for the supposedly deeper blacks on the Optoma is due to the fact that it uses a lower wattage bulb; not something I want...plus, you could just throw a cheap 10$ N2 filter on the BenQ and bam, problem solved (essentially that's what the optoma mimics with it's lower powered bulb). Furthermore, the choice between the two became even easier to make after I read that the Optoma uses a 4x business style RGBCMY color wheel that artificially enhances whites and creates a marketing gimmick higher lumens rating. Meanwhile the BenQ uses a 6x true movie theater style RGBRGB color wheel. That alone decided it for me. I mounted my BenQ to the ceiling and have watched a couple 3d movies and another 2d. I have to say, omg...wow, this thing is really insane. The blacks are not that dark, but who the heck cares? The image off a bluray (not the same if streaming from internet or any other file) is so sharp and the colors are just...wow! I had to play with the 3d to figure things out, but once I did I found myself sitting there and trying to shoo away the objects popping out; especially on Gravity when Sandra Bullock is crying (so cool). Compared to the cinema, in my dedicated theater sitting 9 feet away from 105" screen and 5.1 surround; I prefer my 3d experience, I think the image is WAY sharper than what passive 3d can deliver. Oh, and if you're worried about image brightness? I have no idea why you'd want a brighter image? In fact, I prefer wearing my Sainsonic even watching 2d, just to dim the brightness a little. Last thing, I had a friend over who installs professional and higher end theaters. He said he deals with BenQ but never recommends because of the price and truthfully, he's never even demoed one. His thoughts after coming over? He's going to buy one for his home:). Bottom line, I'm glad I spent the extra 90$ on this projector over the Optoma. I know, just based on the color wheel and bulb strength, that I'm getting a better image and peace of mind that I made the right choice. Had I purchased the Optoma I would have constantly been watching for washed out images and wondering if I made the best choice. Pull the trigger on the BenQ, you won't be disappointed! Gamers, I don't play much but my son loves to play his kids games on xbox 360 and compared to the 50" LCD TV, this thing looks even better. One more thing: it's difficult to find material that will max out what this thing can do. I hate streaming video via netflix or VUDU because, even though they say "trueHD" their file size is like 2GB compared to 50GB off a bluray. If you want the best image on this thing, you need a good bluray player.

I got started in this whole projector purchase after determining the need to replace my smallish 32" LCD we had placed in the basement of our new house. The previous owner already had placed surround sound speakers and wiring for HDMI cables in the walls and ceiling and we've lived in the house for a year. I was hesitant to purchase a projector, not wanting be caught "holding the bag" so to speak. I spent hours...probably 30+, reviewing the myriad of different projects available within the lower tier pricing area. I looked at the Epson 3020, various Optoma's, and BenQ. After hours of reviewing, including CNet reviews and various other places, I determined the BenQ would be the winner. I finally "pulled the trigger" about a week ago and it arrived on a Wednesday. My plan was to do a quick test that evening, then perform the install on the weekend. After setting it up on a table, then testing it out with various DVR'd movies, then with a little Super Street Fighter IV AE, I was completely blown away! I think this projector is quite a steal at the price listed, with pretty good quality. I was concerned about DLP vs the others and I found no issues at all. SSFIV looked amazing! There was no delay while playing and I had set the general size, while on the table, to approximately 140". The images were incredibly crisp and it certainly gave a feeling similar to sitting in a theater. Goal achieved! My projector for the weekend turned into a Wednesday night project, with me staying up until nearly 1 AM watching a few shows and playing a few games, soaking it all in. Buyer beware--early testing may significantly alter your previous plan. Overall, installation wasn't too hard--if you're handy, mounting this projector to the ceiling isn't too difficult. Keep in mind, this only has a vertical keystone and no horizontal keystone--so if you mount it off center, you may have to make some adjustments. My primary concern was the stability of the projector and making sure it would not fall. With the proper mount, this BenQ will be permanently attached to your ceiling without any hassles. I'd suggest looking at the Peerless PRGUNV Precision Gear Universal Projector Mount. That guy is 100% sturdy and allowed me to properly mount with the projector without fear of it falling. If you're not a person that installs these things on the regular, I'd suggest the rule of 4 for installation. What is that? Well, I thought I'd have the mount up and done within 20 minutes or so...yeah, I clocked in at somewhere around 1 hr 20 minutes, when I factored in finding the studs, centering, etc. Ok, so the picture quality is quite good, with the ability to hit 1080p with both blu-ray, dvr, and video games. Like a few reviews say, the darks can be a bit dark, but making an adjustment temporarily to fix this isn't a problem. I watched divergent the other day and just tapped it up a bit to make sure I could see the details while in the night scenes. I would point out, it really isn't any worse than a plasma, in that respect. The picture is quite nice while watching sports, including basketball and football. I have not a worry about the quality, although sometimes very fast movements are slightly blurry, but not any more than my plasma, again. As for a screen, my house has that special flat paint made projectors. It is gray in color and it has no issues showing a perfect picture. The whites are incredibly crisp on this wall and I would highly recommend looking at this as an option compared to buying a screen. I see the screen having utility if you're planning on showing movies outside, but if you're not, skip it! Overall, I'm incredibly pleased with this purchase and I have to agree with the experts. If you have to choose between a 60" 4K and a 120+" 1080p, go big or go home. I saved myself well over $800 going this route--enough to roll that money into a new surround sound system. Not to mention, my friends are now looking at following my lead. Lastly, it is important to figure our what size you want your picture to be and the throw distance. This is a standard throw set-up and BenQ has a calculator on their website to determine where to mount the projector to get the size you need. If you have less space or you'd like to project onto a wall with an angle, I'd recommend picking up the BenQ W1080ST. Two different workhorses for two different applications, but both are quality in my mind.

I am not technical expert, but would like to share my review based on two months of experience with this projector and in mostly in layman terms. First thing, if anyone is looking for the best thing for value of money, simply click on 'buy now' for this projector without any second thought. After around 6 months of reading thru various AV forums, checking with people who actually owned this projector I had zeroed down for this Model and I am personally very happy for the quality we get at the asked price. I am projecting it at wall to wall distance of 9 feet on a 92 inch grand-view screen. My viewing distance is also 9 feet and I am able to get THX recommended viewing angle due to which we get immerse feeling while watching movies. As this is my bedroom setup the projector is ceiling mounted and is bit close to top of head when we seat on bed. Even if its close, we don't hear much fan sound, so its not at all disturbing while silent scene in movies. I have Yamaha 196 to complement with this projector for the sound setup. When everything is ON, you feel like in Movie theater. For bigger rooms, there is no issues, but in my case, my only concerns was with regards to the screen size for projected distance. After raising queries here itself in Amazon, I was convinced that due to good throw ratio I will get big image In my setup, I am getting very good image size. Regarding Rainbow effect, till now, none of my family members / guests / myself have noticed it. Regarding 3D quality, its superb. I have couple of IMAX series and couple of SBS format movies. everything works simply perfect. Regarding 3d depth, there were couple of scenes which we experienced very good 3d depth. While watching one of the IMAX 3d movie, trust me, all of sudden my 5 year old Niece said 'this is superb than movie theater' (I am referring to Indian Theater). I asked, really? she said, yeah ! In due course we had couple of guests and everyone enjoyed big screen. They all liked the picture quality. They had to travel back so even during daytime we were able to get good picture contrast. i.e the Lumens of this projector is sufficient enough to give decent picture for daytime watching (we have blackout curtain ) My Father was delighted to watch FIFA world cup on BIG screen and had experience as if he is present right their in the stadium. Regarding Amazon Customer care, only one word I can say that they are the best customer care people, truly customer centric. I had got delayed shipment and faulty piece, but, I had piece of mind as it was "Amazon fulfilled'. Customer care was truly customer centric and they helped me with refunds for my delayed shipment and immediately sent replacement piece which works perfectly well and that's what the above review to share my real experience and hope it helps other to buy who want to experience BIG screen in cost effective way Once again a BIG THANKS to AMAZON for the excellent customer service. it was really hassle free. I am looking forward for future purchases from 'Amazon only ' for my international shipment requirement. Hats off.

JUST BUY IT ALREADY. For the price , you really can't go wrong and seriously you are not compromising on any video quality. Let me start of saying that, this is my first projector and picture quality was mind blowing. Its as good as watching in a real theater. Let me not get into, how good this projector is or the black level that everyone had talked about. I shall focus on things for which I could not find answers online. I was convinced to get Optoma HD-25LV, but I end up getting this for couple of specific reasons. I am glad I did that (and I saved $300 as well :-) . In my opinion $884 is a steal for this projector. My Theater room has a low ceiling height of 7'5" H * 13.5" W X 22' Length and my top of the screen is about 5" - 6" from the ceiling. HD-25 requires atleast a 8" for the center of the lens to be higher than. Ben Q doesn't require a specific clearance from the ceiling, you could go flush if you want. I used the mount (refer below) approximately 5" drop from the ceiling. NO keystone Or Lens Shift or Zoom was used in my case. Don't relay on the distance calculator its quite off in my opinion. Simple Technique is, Enable the Test Pattern and set the background to blue. Built a simple stand using empty cardboard boxes. Select the Projector position to "Front Ceiling", put the projector upside down on top of the cardboard boxes. I moved slowly back until I can align the edges of the test pattern with my screen. Once close enough, I basically put the mount (not attached) and made it snug using some of my kids book (At this point, it was slightly off and I was worried that I may need to use Keystone Correction). Hung it using the mount and adjusted (both horizontally & vertically), Voila a perfect square. A Simple one man job. Certainly its a short throw compared with Epson or Optoma. I used NATGEO (National Geographic HD Channel from Dish and Blu Ray DVD) to compare between this projector and an 50" Pioneer Elite TV. Honestly, I didn't find any difference at all. In fact, I was able to see for the first time minor details of the image just because of the sheer size of the image. I "hated" non HD channels from Dish on this projector, but it looked nice on the TV, I believe its the size. My theater room is completely dark and this projector illuminates the whole room. Its quite bright. I tried with lights on, its still good. I know I read "Rainbow effects" in lot of places, but I don't know what that is and I didn't see anything other than the movie, I didn't do any setting modifications yet, but right out of the box its pretty good. I have a link from AVS forum for calibration, that I shall post once I had a chance to play around with. Here are the things that I bought Universal Projector Ceiling Mount for DLP / LCD video projectors (Heavy Duty Steel, White, adjustable height 16.9-Inch - 25.6-Inch, built-in cable management, easy installation) - Excellent mount. If you need a height between 6" - 16" drop don't buy it. However this projector has vertical lens shift that could potentially compensate. Elite Screens ER100DH2 Sable Fixed Frame Projection Screen - Amazing screen for this projector. I also bout True Depth 3D glasses, but yet to test 3D or the glass. I also used high speed HDMI cables with Redmere Technology from Mono price, which are by far the cheapest and best quality especially if you want to run 35' in wall

There was a lot of hesitation to buy a DLP projector - my experiences with them in the past usually had the famous rainbow artifacts, but so far this W1070 has been perfectly fine, even in quick black/white motion. The 1080 resolution is fantastic, the colours are decent to good out of the box and you really only get chromatic aberration in the corners when you start projecting into the 150"+ range (and it's really not noticeable or terrible in most cases). The brightness is fine in medium-dark rooms but sort of strained in lighter areas. Now, I don't have a DVD or Bluray player so I can't really comment there; these next comments will be pretty PC-specific. The digital keystone is rough. I don't know if other projectors are better or not, but if you're wanting pixel-crisp straight lines you definitely want to set it up in such a way that allows ±0 keystone. Fortunately, if you're ceiling mounting it, that should be fairly workable. There is a minor vertical optical adjustment, which is handy for fine tuning. Doesn't appear to be left-right adjustment or compensation, so make sure your room works for head-on projection. The 3D is neat, and I bought the SainSonic shutter glasses. Honestly, if you're looking at this for 3D gaming, I wouldn't. You can only drive the full 1080 resolution at 24 hz which is basically unplayable. There's 720 at 60hz, but then you have to play everything in lower resolution - not the end of the world, but sort of disappointing. Also note that the 3D thing from Nvidia is another $40 after the 14 day free trial. Console gaming is sort of inherently tragic because the Xbox 360 barely pushes 720 with 2x AA so stretching it to massive physical size is only going to show the flaws but, that isn't this projector's fault. There's a speaker, but it's pretty lame. Not even sure why it's there. HDMI can contain both video and audio which the projector actually recognizes. That's cool for office / data projector needs, I guess. For the price (which I noticed is $70 cheaper only a few weeks after I bought it :/ ) it seems hard to go wrong. You get great native resolution and a solid picture. I'd buy it again

And I love it. I don't even have the right place to project (wall painting is still in progress), however, the screen looks so nice! It is very bright, I run it mostly in economy mode and brilliant colors off in the night, and during the day it is usable even if there is quite of lot of light from outside. I used it currently with PS3 and the 3D feature is also working really great. (Whipeout HD tested as 3D game). The sound speaker is ... well, I didn't bought it for the sound speaker. It is an emergency speaker :-). So, be sure to have other audio in place if you want to use at home. For conferences it should be enough. Really easy to operate and set-up. With 2 HDMI ports and HDMI-CEC (will turn ps3 off when you turn it off), it works great. The noise is fair. It has to be very silent move to annoy you (Solaris?). Waiting for the Antra PSM-01 to mount it on a ceiling and after painting I will try to calibrate it using some how-tos out there on internet. It should be also fine with the PS3 Move games if you set it up correctly, so that you don't create a shadow when playing. My current screen width is around 86'', looking from 135'' away it looks great. I would recommend it to any gamer :-)
