Review: This stuff works great on new grass seed and existing lawns. - This stuff works. Fast. I've been using this on both new grass seed and on existing lawns. For my existing lawns, applying the product in the early spring (I'm in NY, so early May) makes my lawn much greener and faster-growing then my neighbors. I've learned (the hard way) to apply nitrogen in the spring and the fall but not the peak summer months otherwise you'll burn the grass. In terms of application, I like to put it down before a forecasted lite rain.
Review: Highly Recommend! So Easy to Use - I am by no means a landscaper or a professional, I’m just a single mom of 3 girls trying to make my yard presentable. I moved into a project home 5 years ago now and have been redoing the inside and out, with more of a focus on the interior. The first year I had the front of my home completely dug up and replanted (including several trees cut down) because the previous owner had created a jungle of trees, bushes, plants, and walkways that lead to nowhere. Needless to say it was the ugliest house I want to say on the street but might go as far as saying the whole city because it had not been maintained for several years and was a nightmare, but I knew the property had a lot of potential so I took on the project. After the landscapers replanted the grass seed they were done and I was on my own to try and figure out how the upkeep. Well I watered the grass (occasionally), to what I thought was sufficient and ended up with patches of grass and weed growth everywhere. The next year I put down grass seed in the spring along with weed and feed (not realizing I was doing nothing since the weed and feed was not allowing the seed to germinate, and ended up with more weeds and moss growth. I planted some grass seed in the summer and again watered to my liking (which was not enough) and watched the grass die. I again waited until the spring and threw down some grass seed and ace fertilizer and my summer was a nightmare for weeks because I put down so much fertilizer that my grass was overgrowing in 3 days and still full of weeds and moss. After that nightmare I decided I needed to research because I accepted I really had no idea what I was doing and had spent way too much money experimenting. Then I came across reviews of Scott’s and learned about aeration, and how you can’t use weed and feed at the same time as grass seed, and that I needed a seeder and to fertilize at a set rate. Oh yeah and I decided to seed in the fall! I seeded and winterized my yard for the first time. Then when spring came along I overseeded again and used the Scott’s starter fertilizer along with aerating and using a grub control. The back of the package told me exactly what setting on the spreader to use which was so easy to switch on the spreader. I watered the grass daily sometimes twice a day for 5-10 mins, moving the sprinkler and making sure that all of the grass seed remained moist, then once sprouting I started to water for longer periods. I included what my yard looked like prior to laying down the fertilizer and how it looked approximately 3 weeks later! I still have a long way to go and will still end up with weeds as I didn’t get to weed and feed for the crab grass and clover leafs, but am def going to use Scott’s products for that next spring. This was more expensive than more generic versions of the same thing, but I will only use this brand as the reviews speak for themselves. If it can make my grass grow then I’m sure anyone can grow grass. I’m very happy and highly recommend.
