CubicFun Flying Dutchman 3D Pirate Ship Puzzle with Green LEDs, 360 Pieces

I've done some book nooks, wooden puzzles, and the Cubicfun steamship puzzle. The quality of these Cubicfun puzzles is phenomenal, with sturdy board and construction that isn't flimsy at all when put together. This is my second Cubicfun one, and the results are incredible. Lots of detail, but simple instructions to follow. The little tool they give you to help punch out the items is the best to use for most things. I also had some fine tweezers, a file, and an exacto knife to help when the pieces just wouldn't punch out. The paper for the sails is not particularly delicate. Just take your time. I did this one in about 10-15 hours (I'm slow) and listened to audiobooks. Very relaxing. Everything fits pretty well, although some of the rigging and masts had to be adjusted multiple times to get taut. The LEDs were easier to install than I thought they'd be, and look phenomenal in both light and dark. Only issue is that the side board "sticker" pieces don't always stay on well, but it's not a big deal, and I might add some glue to those. But you DO NOT need glue for anything, and things will fit together better as you complete the ship, so don't worry if it seems not quite perfect as you're going along. If you're having difficulty putting a part in, pinch it a little bit and it helps a lot. Overall, I'd highly recommend this model.

My 11 yr old grandson had a blast with this build. I had to do very little on this project. Really all I did was wire the led lights and maybe a few things he had a little trouble with but he was able to assemble it himself and then finished produce is actually really cool. This is a great project to do with you children and they’ll be so proud when it’s done! Awesome family project!

I want to start by saying this is the first time I’ve ever put together something like this. I think a lot of people getting this amazing ship have already bought a cubicfun ship or puzzle before and know what to expect. Even so I found this a blast to put together. So much so that I was having trouble pausing to eat or do anything else really because I didn’t want to stop until the ship was done! My fiancé put the bones of the ship together and then we had dinner and he wanted to do something else so I finished the rest of the ship by myself. The whole time I was thinking how awesome of a gift this would be for someone. Seriously great gift idea! The instructions are all picture instructions and being a visual person I found that very awesome. As some reviewers mentioned I did find that using glue in a few places was helpful. I just had Elmers glue on hand so I used that and I can’t see where I used the glue. However I recommend waiting a bit before using the glue. Some parts don’t get sturdy until a few steps later where they get locked in place by other pieces. What comes to mind is the plank walkway you put in front of the cannons. Mine wouldn’t stay put very well until the railing was attached and then it didn’t need glue. The Cubicfun logo you use as a hole punch is cool. Later on I found that a toothpick can work even better for punching out small holes. I found everything to pop out of the boards really well but I was careful not to rip anything. The good news is since you work on the internal parts of the ship first if you mess up a little in the beginning it won’t be noticeable. Putting this ship together kinda gets progressively harder and more tedious but it’s fun especially seeing it come to life right before your eyes. The LEDs as others have mentioned really make it something else. Finally, I’ll share why I bought this. I’m having a pirate wedding in October this year! I saw this and thought it would make a great table decoration! It sure does me hearties! So I’m buying at least one other ship now haha. Well worth the time it takes to put together and lastly I want to give a shout-out to the graphic designer(s) who did the artwork on this thing. It’s gorgeously detailed with barnacles and a skeleton inside a gibbot on deck!

Purchased this after reading other reviews. For the price, this is a nice kit. Love the LED lighting and theme in general. The printed artwork is also nice. For comparison I've build a ROKR marble run, and this kit does not assemble as easily - it's not the number of parts, but rather some poor fit, instructions, out of order steps, etc. There are parts that very difficult to assemble as you have no leverage to use to get them to fit. Other things rely on previous steps to align jjjuuussstt right which, because this is foam "part tab A --> part slot B" kit is often not the case. The "jaws" mounted to the front of the boat is an example, as are some of the mast assemblies. IMO the makers need to run through this kit again and change the assembly order (and parts involved if needed) so that things fit better, and the builder isn't awkwardly trying to force a part and tab where isn't aligning to - including much better structure and alignment of the large bottom 'skin' pieces below the boat and they way they mate to each other and the bow pieces. It still looks cool when done, it's just that a lot of thing don't quite align, and many parts (example the 'ropes' going to the masts) ended up bent because of assembly order. This could be a really great kit if it assembled better.

This puzzle was so much fun to put together and is my favorite so far. I also did the Queen Anne's Revenge (which is really the Black Pearl) and this one was easier to assemble in my opinion. Although it says no tools or glue here are some tips to make assembly much easier: Invest in a pair of inexpensive jewelry crimpers or needle nose pliers to pinch the tabs that are inserted into the holes. It will be so much easier. Also use a small paint brush to apply some tacky glue to the tabs that you feel may pop out. I only needed to glue a few pieces compared to the Queen Anne's Revenge. Nothing came apart and flattening the tabs with a crimper made everything pop into the holes with no effort. The green lights make this look even more amazing. NOTE THERE ARE A COUPLE OF ERRORS AND A STEP MISSING ON PAGE 17: For Section C.10 - Parts 106 (x2) need to be inserted before adding part 108 (see page 16 for example with part 111. Parts 111 and 108 should both be assembled the exact same way with parts 106). Also on page 17, Section C.11 - Piece 109 is mislabeled. It should be piece 110. AND ON PAGE 18 - Piece 125 attaches to piece 134 and not piece 132. There should be a corrected page but if your instructions don't include this amendment then please follow this instruction. I streamed Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest while assembling this puzzle and it added to the fun. Take your time and follow the tips and you should be happy with the results.

Fun, large, some complexity and took way longer than suggested on Amazon page. Still a great model for the money and worth the result. Great Fun Project I Didn't Share With Grandkids!!

Absolutely awesome gift for my 10 year old. She spent 3 full days on this over a Christmas break and it came out fantastic. This is a very detailed kit that is worth the price.

This was an amazing puzzle to put together. Some of the pieces did not want to fold well or fit into the proper slots. The instructions could have been better, especially as you move through the puzzle. It was difficult to know exactly where the lines were pointing. With the stand, it's about 18-19 inches tall. This would make a great gift for anyone who is into 3D puzzles. All the pieces were on the appropriate sheets. It is well worth the price. With the light kit, this thing looks spooky in low light.

Echt mega verrast over de bouwkwaliteit! Alles zit goed stevig en doordacht in elkaar. Schip is groot en mooi. Bereid je voor op flink wat uren werk maar met de duidelijke instructie komt dat helemaal goed. Dit was de eerste keer voor mij om zo iets te maken en het ging me best goed af.

This is fantastic model and the detailing is superb throughout. I love the look of the Flying Dutchman and the LEDs bring it to light. All the additional elements that build up as you go such as the ghost faces on the portholes, the extra panelling and so on, really add depth to the model and makes you think they could have just stopped there with some of the details, only to find they keep adding more. What's especially good is that no two components are exactly the same - different graphic detailing on everything means they didn't just copy/paste from one side to the other. Instructions are easy to follow and the build was a lot of fun - just being cardboard, take your time! Some parts were tricky to slot together because if you don't have something correctly lined up earlier, then later when you need to attach an adjoining piece you could find it won't reach. Some tips - pinch the ends of the tabs before insertion so they go in easier At the end, many of the wasted punched out pieces I was able to use to fill in gaps were pieces didn't quite go flush together and where light from the LEDs bled through. Those little centimetre long panel pieces that you'd throw away were excellent for glueing into the gaps and blocking up the bleed in many places.
