I wanted a plate warmer that I could keep on the table next to my recliner. This one was less than half the price of an actual plate warmer. It happens to work very well as a plate warmer, just put it on a very low setting and it's great. I haven't tried to boil water with it, but it's only 1,000 Watts, and 1,250 watts is usually the limit for one 110 volt item in an AC outlet in the United states. So the complaints that it doesn't boil water very fast is not a surprise. It's not that powerful. It should be fine for doing most cooking that doesn't involve maximum heat. Haven't tried it yet, but it does do what I wanted to do. I wish it was thinner, it's height from top to bottom is probably triple or quadruple what a plate warmer pad would be but it's also $14.
