Plugged in, this is really good!
I perform with a band and one of the venues we play in is really, really small! I don't have the floor space to use my regular cajon, so I bought this to play on my lap. I originally got the slightly smaller version with no electronics, but I was very disappointed with that. It sounded more like a tom tom with very poor bass. This one on the other hand, sounds good for what it is. It will never have the clout of a proper sit on cajon, but it's when it's plugged into an amplifier that it really comes into its own! A turn off a knob and you've got as much bass as you want! I will say that I would prefer the snare sounds to be better, which is why I've deducted a star, but still, for using in places where space is tight, it's great. The build quality is nice too and feels really sturdy and well made. I sometimes have a bit of an issue with it slipping on my legs, but never badly enough that it threatens to fall off. I just reposition occasionally and all is good. I honestly wouldn't want to be without it. It's so convenient and definitely has it's place. And it's good fun to play! Quick note - when I play it, I do remove my wedding ring so as not to risk damaging it. I don't feel the need to do this with my sit on cajon, so I guess it's something to do with the different playing position and how my hands hit it. But I wouldn't want to be leaving my ring on as I do fear I would damage the top.

The pickups make a HUGE difference
This instrument is so much fun to play! I bought the acoustic turbo slaptop last year and then joined a band. I learned that the first challenge for me was keeping the instrument on my lap. While seated on another, more traditional cajon, I had problems with the slaptop falling forward, especially when I tried to use a foot tambourine. I resolved this by buying a yoga belt and strapping the slaptop around my back while I was seated. This method allows me to move freely without it falling off my lap. Problem solved, and that also allowed me to start using a foot pedal to keep the kick beat going on the other cajon. But I also had another problem : getting enough volume so the audience and my bandmates could hear the great sounds coming out of the thing. I had tried using a mic that I patched through a Bose S1 Pro amp before sending it to the band's soundboard, but had very limited success. I finally decided to spring for this model with the pickups, and it made all the difference. However, I also had an issue similar to another reviewer when, during a gig, the cajon suddenly sounded as if there was a crack in the top. It sounded flat instead of resonant, and I can only assume there was a defect inside of it with one of the pickups. I returned it to Amazon within the return window and immediately ordered another, and this time I also purchased a 3-yr protection plan. Despite the troubles, I think Meinl has come up with a winner, and I don't see anything on the market that can compete right now with its convenience, versatility and sound.
