Christofle

Assouline prints beautiful books with wonderful photographs - this is one of them ( albeit in a smaller format). The book has lovely photographs ( the majority of the book) and a brief history of Christofle akin to a Wikipedia page. If you are looking for information for anything about their patterns ( save one photo of their then-current 2005 production ), this book is sorely lacking any information, pictures, or even pattern names of their historic flatware. I vacillated between 2 and 3 stars because Assouline creates beautiful books, but the content in this small ( in size and content) volume, though pretty, is little more than an advertisement.

This is a valuable book for all serious Christofle collectors that want to understand the different eras certain Christofle pieces were created and for what. The Luxury Liners, the Orient Express and some Grand Hotels used Christofle. Knowing a bit more of all those periods makes one appreciate even more this unique and high quality label. Not everyone got appointed by Emperor Napoleon III, like Charles Christofle, for becoming official purveyor to the court!Highly recommended reading.Mariette's Back to Basics

The booklet gives a brief overview about Christofle and their silver work. Fine pictures of important items manufactured in the past and today are accompagnied with an introduction into the history of Christofle. The booklet will not impress anyone that is interested in a complete listing of the works from Christofle but it provides a general overview that is hard to find otherwise. Certainly anyone who wants to get such general overview will be absolutely pleased and will get a fairly good introduction and a listing of the most important people working for and working at Christofle.

Great book and great condition
