I'm trying to waste as much money as I can. I'm debating between buying this or lighting $1000 cash on fire. Would buying this be the best choice?

Depends on if you're planning to use it to heat your room. These new cards are almost efficient enough to make just burning your cash more cost effective. Even more so in the case of a $1079 RTX 3060.

Are people actually paying these prices?

Ethereum coin miners people that are cryptocurrency mining that do not know that Nvidia has put an lhr limiter on these cards are going to get ripped off. The only way you can really tell if the cards are of mining quality or not is to look at the vbios by us if you flash it you can tell. My advice if you want to buy a good GPU on the cheap either wait or try to find one that is more of an RTX 3070ti or a rx6900xt as amd's gpus are coming up in the world right now as their CPU is starting to fall down a little bit too Intel again. If you're desperate to buy a new GPU right now otherwise wait until the super lineups of these gpus come out by Nvidia soon along with AMD as well doing another refresh by the end of the year.
