Q: I understand the top does not come off but how have you found to clean it?

I just wipe it off the knives are clean,and they hang in it and don’t touch anything but the top

Q: I'm thinking of getting this to store dirty knives until I'm ready to wash them. How hard is it to clean this block?

I don't think it's a good idea. Looks very difficult if not impossible to get really clean, and it doesn't come apart.

Q: can this be used for ceramic knives

You could put any kind of knife in it, but you should read my review before you buy. The best knife holder I have ever owned is the Kapoosh. It will hold any style or shape of knife perfectly. The new ones are bamboo and I have no experience with them, but suspect they are fine. Kapoosh is pricey, but fantastic.
