## Description

The Up Soundtrack is an enlightening score album composed by Michael Giacchino. This is his third feature film for Pixar after The Incredibles and Ratatouille. Giacchino wrote a character theme-based score that the filmmakers felt enhanced the story of the film. Up received positive reviews from music critics and won major awards. The Up Soundtrack has earned two Grammy Awards (for Best Score Soundtrack Album and Best Instrumental Composition for "Married Life"). The score also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and the Academy Award for Best Original Score. Up was the first Disney film since Pocahontas to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score, spanning a gap of 14 years, and the first Pixar film to win the award. It also became one of few scores to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Grammy.

    A Memorable Score

This soundtrack won the Academy Award for best Score the year it came out, and it deserved it in my opinion. The music stands out in a way few soundtracks do, these days. Michael Giacchino spins and pulls the film's simple and haunting central melody every way he can. I'd say he captured the mood of the story perfectly, but that's probably not giving him enough credit because, of course, he created the film's mood as much as the screenwriters and the animators. It's a wonderful recording. My only reservation with this CD is that it was apparently burned on demand, rather than pressed in mass quantities the way most CDs are. I wonder if it will hold up (pardon the pun) over the years? I'm not sure, but I think that burned CDs tend to have a shorter life than disks stamped from a master.Disney had to be prodded to put this soundtrack out as a CD, but to their credit, when they were finally shamed into it (probably by the Oscar win) they did it up right. It comes with a lavish booklet. All of which makes it very strange that they seem to have done their best to bury the composer and conductor's name. The word's "Music by Michael Giacchino" appear in about five-point type at the very bottom of the CD cover. The label on the disk itself is no better. The man is probably one of the most sought-after composers in film today, and he won an Oscar for this soundtrack. Give him a little credit!Actually, that's a poor choice of words. The whole problem is that they gave him 'a little credit.'

    Beautiful and well done

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this score! The themes are impressively intertwined within the story and characters from the movie. I used it as a teaching moment for my elementary students, particularly with one of the opening segments featuring the two main characters' full life story being told through visual and just the music score. It was a great way to teach how music can help tell the story as the score changed with each life event in that short segment. I also talked about the higher pitched instruments such as flute and Piccolo being used with fluttering quick rhythms as the balloons lifted the house into the air in one of the early scenes from the movie. The use of heavy drums and full horn sections also were a teaching moment regarding evil or danger scenes and characters. Wonderfully melodic music to listen to with the full orchestra and it is a great fit to the time period of this movie and the characters as well. I compose music for short films myself and learn a lot about how to use Music to help tell a story from this wonderful composer. Highly recommend it.

Meh, too much of the same thing.

I loved the movie UP and I really liked most of the music from the movie. This collection has all of that music, and some of the pieces are indeed beautiful. I did not realize, however, that so many pieces would be variations on the main theme. A lot of the songs are very short as well, which makes the album difficult to play on shuffle. Don't get me wrong I have many other soundtracks that primarily consist of instrumental tracks, such as Cloud Atlas and Cinema Paradiso, and I don't have the same issues with those albums. The artwork on the album, however, is beautiful and done in a style that reminds me of Mary Blair. All in all... some terrific pieces in here.
