I cannot record because term "purse" keeps flashing. What should I do?

I don't see a "purse". I suspect you are seeing "pause". Normally the "pause" flashes if you hit the record twice. If you hit the record button again the recording will continue. If that doesn't work, remove the batteries. This is essentially a reset, reboot, or restart. As in most electronics this will get you back to square one.
