I mixed a full 1 pound bag into 7 cups of 80 degree water. It turned pink right away. I stirred it quickly and almost didn't have time to get it into the casting box. Then I plunged my hand into it. After a few minutes it turned gray/white and I was able to wiggle my hand free. After 20 minutes I filled it with plaster of Paris. I let that sit for two hours and then removed the mold. It came off easily. The plaster of Paris cast has great detail. I will use this stuff again. Some hints: 1. I made a form to hold the casting by taping together cardboard to make a tube. Then I put a plastic supermarket bag inside of that. The alginate is pretty thick so it was not a problem. 2. I should have been more careful to position my hand in the middle of the form; the alginate was thin on one side. Still, it held up to the plaster casting. 3. One pound was just enough to do my big hand up to just beyond my wrist. 4. I oiled my hand and arm with vegetable oil. I think that was unnecessary. I don't think the alginate would have pulled out my hair. 5. Next time I will mix it in an even bigger bowl. Really big bowl. I might do it with a bit more water; the alginate will take longer to set. 6. When adding the plaster I banged the mold several times to release air bubbles, but there were still some big ones. I should have put in just a bit of plaster to begin with and rotated the mold to get air out of the ends of my fingers. 7. Demolding was done with a small paring knife. At one point I broke the casting because I was pulling too hard. I should have taken my time. In the end I used some dental picks to get out the last little bits of alginate. Overall this is great stuff and very easy to use. Is it particularly irritating to the skin?** A: I'm not really sure it would be the perfect medium for that, since when mixed it's quite thin (slightly thicker than pancake batter) and then it takes up to a minute to solidify... it might be too runny to apply. Also, I used it to make hand molds and it left a weird tacky plastic-ish residue on our skin for a few days even after multiple washings with different soaps. Still, it wasn't irritating to the skin at all in our case, though, and it smells like cherries, so was pleasant to work with. Do you need vaselin or any lubricant to realese this from the skin** A: Each 1lb bag yields about 9 cups of material. It will not stick to skin, but hair over 1/2 inch long can stick. If using next to a hairline, petroleum jelly (or similar) should be used to cover the hair. **Q: How much work can this get done? Baby's hand and/or foot?** A: You can get at least 4 sets of baby hand AND feet castings out of this, depending on the size of the mold you use. The ratio on the bag says 7oz of water to 2oz of powder, so you'll get 8 typical-sized portions of material out of it. 7oz in a small plastic cup or bowl would be plenty for a newborn hand or foot. If you were to do flat hand- or footprints (not full casts) with it in a small dish, you could easily get twice that out of one bag. **Q: Is one pound enough to make a casting of two joined adult hands?** A: Yes, it defintely can be enough, but it ultimately depends on your casting method. The material yields roughly 8-9 cups of material depending on the water amount used. One example: If you are using a bucket and are dipping the hands, place the hands in the bucket and then fill with 8.5 cups of water. Do you have the coverage you need/want?
