Concerning freewheel vs cassette - if it is freewheel you will need to get different rear wheel, or at least different hub to accept cassette. If cassette - some older bikes have short driver body on hub that will not accept 9spd cassette. Again - you will need different rear wheel or hub. So - if you need different rear wheel - two ways to go - entire new wheel - or just change hub. Entire rear wheel - make sure you are getting one which is 26" and will work with rim brakes. Also axle width important - most likely 135mm on your old bike. Alternative to entire new wheel - buy a suitable new hub - and use it to rebuild old wheel. Maybe get a bike shop to help with this complex job. Next - shifters and derailleur. If old parts are not 9spd, they need to be replaced. Just buy the Microshift parts that go with this cassette - and enjoy. If they are old 9spd stuff, maybe you can get them to work, or not. Get a new 9spd chain.
